I'm done with anything iObit. The last upgrade totally borked my system and led to many problems, which, in the end required a clean install of Win 7.

What I am looking for is a good system optimization software and something good for maintenance. A lot of the stuff out there wants to install a bunch of stuff I don't want, or wants to modify or add tool bars, etc. You know what I mean.

Please give me your recommendations and why. Also, these should not require constant upgrades for money, if you know what I mean.

Thanks!

Windows Repair All In One can help with problems as far as maintenance goes. But generally Ccleaner is a good app to use to rid the computer of old temp files and System Ninja will delete files Ccleaner doesn't.

There is really no such thing as a maintenance program. It's all on the user and what he/she does to their computer, what they install, etc. Above all else common sense goes a long way.

Windows Manager ~ www.yamicsoft.com

Easily the best system utility out there (IMHO) has 20 days trial period & IIRC lifetime updates when purchased. Just give it a try, besides I don't know any other freeware utility that can match even half of its features or paid one for that matter.

I don't think you need any "maintenance" software.

This. It seems people that are computer-OCD about "maintenance software" (registry "cleaners", etc.) have far more computer problems than I do.

Edit: To be clear, I'm speaking of software / OS maintenance software. Hardware maintenance software, such as CPU-Z, GPU-Z, CoreTemp, and HDTune and CrystalDiskMark/Info are useful. Though I don't really defrag. I suppose Windows 7 does it automatically.

This i will also support. Most programs today have a way to check for updates online. What I usually do is, once a month, run thru the programs and check for updates manually. Some will check automatically. Simply download and update software as is necessary. A maintenance program is nor necessary. IMHO.

I would say having a boot time repair disk like Ultimate Boot CD is the best way to go for this. Otherwise, CCleaner is a good cleaner for removing selected files and temporary internet files and for adjusting startups. Temp files are OK to remove.

I recommend keeping something around that can read your SMART data from your drives. HWiNFO is great all around and especially for this feature.

do not forget to make an image of your system on a regular basis, every 2-3 weeks if possible.

Backup is scheduled for every Sunday night. So, it seems most are saying I don't need it. I concur. Everything I have ever had installed has called my attention to problems and "supposedly" fixed them, but those problems "seemed" to come more frequently, until they brought the system to it's knees. Yep, how about running no maintenance software for a while? Just good AV and Anti-Spyware.

Windows is a messy pig. It's like living with a bunch of slobs and you have either 3 options:

- Keep yelling and cleaning up after them, knowing they will never learn
- Join along and be messy and disorganized too
- Move out to a new frugal Linux distro that saves all your changes to one external file instead (my entire savefile in slacko puppy is 128Meg :thumbsup

Maybe my new year's resolution should be to quit being lazy about learning Linux. Now that I installed a SSD in my laptop, as my primary drive, I can create a dual boot system with Linux on my second HD. Would that be a good idea?

Why was moving to dual boot with Linux prevented by a SSD?

I would try it. My New Years resolution is to learn Linux.

Wasn't prevented by SSD. I'm not going to risk my primary OS to experiment. I can experiment on my second drive.

Not a bad idea. There really isn't much to learn though; or maybe there's tons to learn. Depends on what you want to do. For daily common use, GNU/Linux is as easy as anything else. It's just an operating system. If you want to make it do tricks, you aren't prevented from doing anything aside from technological constraints.

I don't do much special, but I want to get into scripting to automate tasks. I couldn't use Windows anymore. After the freedom of GNU/Linux, the handcuffs of proprietary O/Ss is intolerable.

The best thing to do is just use it. That forces you to do unfamiliar things, and work problems out. When people dual boot to "try it out", I suspect they end up staying in Windows due to the familiarity, and wanting to "get stuff done". The GNU/Linux partitions end up just taking up drive space. IOW, I'd remove the Windows drive, install GNU/Linux to the other one, and use it exclusively for awhile. That forces you to work through it, and will give you a better feel for what it's like to run, with no easy out when things get tricky.
