Help me choose: Hercules Digifire 7.1 or Soundblaster Audigy

I've been getting more and more into audio on my PC. I would like to hook up my sound card to my home audio receiver to playback video files and MP3's. I also play games alot. I like the fact that the Digifire has three Firewire connections as I will probably need them. I also like the fact that the Digifire costs less than the Audigy and has a connection for a TOS link cable. Will I have any regrets if I decide to go with the Hercules Digifire 7.1 sound card?

I would go with the soundblaster audigy, from the reviews I've seen, the Hercules is pretty average, but I haven't actually tried it out. My friend has the audigy hooked up to his stereo and it sounds awesome.

Don't go with the Audigy, go with the Audigy 2. Its analog domain is cleaner, frequency response is better, and the sampling is now at a true 24bits.

If you want a true audiophile card, neither of those are very good choices.

My editor and one of our friends that works for another website tested 6 sound cards and ...to our surprise, the Audigy was fairly middle of the road.

Terratech, that's all I'm gonna say.

I love my Audigy 2. The difference between it and my Live! is significant. Never tried the Hercules or Audigy 1 though.

When you hear it side by side with some other cards, you'll notice the difference.

However, by itself...you probably won't care.

I wouldn't have thought I would hear such a difference either but...I stood corrected.

BTW: You need GOOD speakers to tell the difference between sound cards.
