I am using this dsl router/firewall

Router Link

When I go to www.grc.com and test my shields, it shows port 80 as being open. How do I close it? This is making me nuts.

I am using Windows 2000 with all the current service packs and updates. Please advise before I pull all my hair out.

You should check to see if your DSL Router has remote management enabled. If so disable it. It is probably open for the Web Managment for your DSL Router.

Any documentation come with the router? If so, it should not be too difficult to block that port.

However, that port and thousands of others should be closed by default, unless there is a DMZ (WTF is a DMZ?) feature in the router, which was enabled for some reason.

Remote Management is disabled. I found the CD that came with it, it has the documentation. I see nothing on closing port 80, but I did find a technical support phone number, so I am sitting on hold at the moment.

I checked IIS isn't even installed. I sat on hold for an hour last night, I finally had to give up because I had to go to bed. I am going to try again tonight.

<< Does a "netstat -a" show you anything??? >>

I am trying to remember this off the top of my head because I am at work and I did this last night, but it did show me some ports in the 1000's. It also showed that forums.anandtech.com was connected when I didn't have any browsers open which I though was weird. I don't think it is my computer that is connected, I think it is the router.

Just put a firewall on your desktop and if anything gets past your router with either port 80 or any other port, you still can block them on your desktop. I strongly beleive port 80 is for the Web Managment for the router. I have a linksys router and it shows the same. You may have inadvertantly allowed WAN access to the configuration of the Linksys Router itself , check your router configuration under the Advanced tab and make sure Remote Management and Remote upgrade are set to disable.

See, that's the weird thing, I had zone alarm installed, and when I went to grc, it still showed that port 80 was open. When I do the IP Agent program, it shows my IP as 192.168.xxx.xxx, but the IP to the router is 162.16.xxx.xxx. That is why I think it is the router. I have checked and double checked those settings, that is why I am at a loss. I am going to get back on the phone with tech support when I get home.

I had the same problem a few months ago. My problem tho' was solved by closing IIS. Tho' you said it's not even installed, I guess you should double-check that, just in case.

OK. I just got off the phone with the tech support guy. He says port 80 has to be open to surf the web. That sure doesn't sound right to me, but he insists. I am telling you, its not even installed, look:

Look

So, SHOULD port 80 be open????
