Two choices I am looking at... not sure which would be best for the money. I will be gaming heavily, that is the primary consideration.

Option 1)

Dell UltraSharpTM 1703FP HAS 17"
Pixel Pitch: .264 mm
Vertical Scan Refresh: 56 - 76
Response time: Typical 25 ms
Contrast Ratio: 600:1
Dimensions: H: 14.96" W: 14.80" D: 8.37"

Option 2)

Dell UltraSharpTM 1800FP 18"
Pixel Pitch: .281 mm
Vertical Scan Refresh: 55 - 85
Response time: Typical 30 ms
Contrast Ratio: 350:1
Dimensions: H: 17" W: 16" D: 8.8"
Costs $70 more than option 1

All other stats are the same between the two.

I would like the 18", but how drastically will the performance difference be between the two? Will I really notice a significant difference while in use? Thanks in advance.

If I had the choice out of those two it would be the 1800FP. It's held in high regard here. Personally though, I would go for the new Samsung 172x

I recently bought a Samsung 173T for $599 Canadian (about $470 US) and have found it to be a great monitor as well. The 172x will be a little better as a gaming monitor but the 173T still is very good.

I recently bought the 173T too! Although I paid $619 CAD

But I think you should get the 1703FP, the contrast makes a nice diff. But they may not be rated using the same standards... hard to say.

Check out the Dell support forums. Neither one is suitable for gaming. Other good sources of first hand info are the hardocp and arstechnica forums. Tomshardware crapped on the 172x. The supposedly good version is another quarter away. They still prefer the BOE Hydis 20ms panel. If you want a gaming FPD from Dell, they have several 17" 'ers with the same 16ms panel: NEC, ViewSonic, Planar and maybe Sony.

p.s. I considered 'em all and ended up with the ViewSonic VP171b and was not dissapointed.

No matter how good it is... LCD's are just not that great for gaming.

I run a Samsung LCD myself and it's fine, just not great for gaming.

Not so noticable for Diablo, although there is some motion blur, but
FPS games will be noticeable...

just my opinion

LCD is great for gaming, your eyes won't feel tired for playing 24 hrs non-stop.
No motion blur on FPS games at all.

Tom's Hardware only crapped on the 172x because they got the 16ms one. However, Samsung has upgraded it to 12ms response time and new reviews are out for that one. Just do a google search for Samsung 172x. There isn't that much reviews because its still "quiet" and not much talk about it.

But definately if you can wait, get this one. It's gonna be an awesome monitor for gamers and movie lovers.

Unforunately, if you wait after December the price increases for all the LCD monitors are going up. So if you want one, get it NOW (literally).

If gaming is your primary consideration, you definately do not want to get either of the 2 monitors you listed or any dell monitor, they are just too slow. You should be looking at monitors with faster response times like hitchi cml174, nec 1760nx, viewsonic vp171b, and samsung 172x

How do you know this? I was looking at getting a 17" lcd around Febuary or March, but if the prices are going up even more I might get the monitor now. But then again it is months away that I want to buy one.

Has anyone else heard of the lcd prices going up yet again after December? I would rather buy one now if it will save me some money (ie $50 or more).

I asked this in my above post too. So, boost.

The idea of price increases has been floating aboot for awhile and Samsung already did so once recently. Personally, I would not be concerned if you intended to wait three or four months for newer technology anyway but if you think you will end up with anything that is currently available then you may as well buy now.

Dell have very good monitors. People enjoy hating on a monitor like the 1901FP but praise the Samsung 191T (even though they are identical).

I am not sure why THG likes that panel so much since they are going out of business. The VP171B is one of the better AUO based LCDs, but color reproduction is really bad.
