I second the Honda Accord. I like Honda's the best. If you cant get an accord go with the altima, just because it would be much more fun to drive, and the suspension isnt designed for an old man like most toyotas are like. Niassan has nice tight handling like Honda. Toyotas make you feel like you are riding on a pillow and dont hug the road.

avoid american engineered vehicles, dear god, I take back what I said about toyotas if you are getting a chevy malibu, save yourself the headache when you start racking up miles and get a toyota or honda

If you are sub 40, Altima, if you are 40+, Camry.. that's all I see it as.
I could not imagine at the age of 24 (me) driving a Toyota Camry... not denying it's a good car or anything.. just the average owner is not me..

Camry's are pretty bulletproof cars, but also boring to drive. The V6 Altima would be more fun, but out of your price range...so I'd say go for a Camry.

the camry looks really big on the outside but is also very big on the inside. the back of an altima is much less roomy but seems to be more fun to drive.

Get the Altima. The Camry looks like a big box frame on undersized wheels.
Reliability wise I think both will be good.

OP, do you want a brand new car?

if not then get a used nissan maxima, that car will smoke both camry and maxima's partner, altima.

if you like to drive, buy the nissan, as it will be more fun. if you don't really like to drive, buy the toyota, as it will be more comfortable and refined.

i'll have to go back and check out the altima with my wife and see what she thinks of it. she likes the camry but i like the altima - however, the lack of power seats in the base model among other features is a big turn off for her.

maximas are too expensive, even when used. not to mention gas guzzlers. malibus may be worth it, like one poster mentioned about JD power's award to GM for improved reliability - at the same time, the savings I get with the loaded features can get me an extended warranty from the reputable online warranty services. Lets see..

Altima.

People are still clinging onto notions of car makers from awhile ago.

Toyota, has slipped a VERY long way. Nissan has come up QUITE a bit and I would not hesitate to buy a Nissan vs. a Toyota (lol, check my sig, consider this disclosure).

Honestly even Domestics have come up QUITE a bit in quality, but people who haven't bought one in a decade or more continue pressing the notion that if you buy one its going to be trash after 60k miles. It's simply not true.

It all really depends on what you want out of the car. You can tell from my sig I want enjoyment more than I want sound fiscal actions.
That being said it still has the highest resale value in its class, and if that's whats important to you, base your decision off that.

Test drive, test drive, test drive.

Don't ask a bunch of forum people unless you want to end up with a car that would make a % of ATOT'ers happy.

Do the homework. Go get a TMV price on all the cars, see which ones are actually going out the door for less, see which ones have a better resale value. Then go test drive each and every one of them. And don't just puts around the speed limit, get semi-aggressive a couple times, get a real feel for the car. THEN decide which one you want to go home in.

Anyone who actually uses an internet forum to pick their car is just ASKING to be unhappy with their purchase.

my dad was looking at a new car for himself when i got home from college (this past february was when he ended up buying)

we test drove the v4, v6 altimas, and v4, v6 camrys.

the altima looks cheap on the inside, the door handles on the outside aren't "finished" they're obviously finished, but the 2 parts of the door handle that come together has an edge. it's not sanded down, they're just stuck together, there's a plastic edge. The locked door thingy on the altima looks cheap. it looks like a large piece of hollow plastic with foil covering it.

that being said, the altima is a lot more fun to drive. The pick-up is good, even with the 4 cyllinder. Unfortunately, this means that the engine is tuned for acceleration, and it's way loud. My dad was driving a maxima that he ended up giving to me when he bought the new car. power from the altima seemed about the same (but then again i never really push the maxima for all of its power) but the volume seemed to be 10x that of the maxima at normal acceleration. If you enjoy the noise, it'll be a good buy. Otherwise, it'll probably end up annoying you. the 6 cyllinder is nice and quite, but the price tag goes up past your price range.

The camry, is a lot more "refined" it's also doesn't feel nearly as fast. but.... it's more comfortable and quiet, and has more room for passengers in the back, and is a LOT cheaper.

I'm not sure how things are where you live, but in LA, you can get a brand new camry LE for 15800 - 16000 before TTL. The altima, well, you never see an ad for them like that. They're advertised at the $2000 down $98 a month 2 year lease.

you shouldn't be trusting the people on this website to help you buy a car, go test drive both, figure out which you like best, and buy it. An alternative to the LE is the base model with everything except for a full sized spare and um, i forget what else. you can find it on the website, my aunt just bought one of those a couple weeks ago, ended up being about 1500 less.
