i'm with everyone that says do as many as you can until when you try to do another you just arent going anywhere... hold for 3-5 seconds then let youself down.... IMO its the best way to do it.... do a few sets like that every day...

start slow... if you can only do 2-3 pushups at a time now dont shoot for 10 just yet.... go for 5.. then 8.. then 10... work up slow... make your overall goal something like 15 without stopping

Update: I did a bunch of um yesterday. Now my arms are sore as hell and I can't even do one otherwise I'll just colapse. I'm gonna do more tomorrow if my arms feel better. Thanks for the advice.

lol, told ya

anyways, just don't get discouraged! i went from barely being able to do 10, to doing 20 straight last night. all in less than a month

It's be pretty hard to hurt yourself doing pushups, so do them even if your arms are still sore. Do them until you can't anymore, and do them slow, stabilize. It's quality no quantity.
 

Yup, posting on the internet will help you really push your limits.

Just accept the fact that you are going to be old and fat like the rest of America.

When I was 17/18 in HS I could do 30-40 pushups a night. Now that I'm 24, I can barely do 4, lol. I'm pretty out of shape myself. Though my weight difference is neglible compared from then to now, only 8lb gain from 120 to 128. Just haven't been exercising much outside of HS. Got a bike this summer, and started riding it more and more. Sit ups is still very challenging for me.

Started taking karate class just to get some exercise in, rather than site on my arse on the phones all day.

Noc: Seriously, trust me here for 1 week. Do AS MANY AS YOU CAN partial pushups from the top, and then from the bottom. They both work different muscle groups. Move about 1 inch from where you start at the top, do them fast (unless it hurts) and do them until you can't. In a weeks time, trying doing full pushups again, you will LOVE the change in your body in just a short week.

And start doing hindu squats man!!!
