LOL, 8-5? 70k?

are you dreaming?

I don't think jobs like that actually exist anymore. If you make any kind of money, you'll be working long hours.

If you are skilled (and I would say an EE is considered skilled) those jobs certainly do exist.

I don't understand...but that's nothing new with me.

Just remember to keep it in perspective. Yes the stress sucks but you're making a really good living.

This. I can't imagine complaining about a job that pays more than 70k a year. Then again, I complain about my job and I'll probably make about that much this year... :hmm:

what if you were making $70k+ a year and they called you on your vacation or honey moon or christmas morning and told you to come in to work?

A friend of mine made ~50k in 6 months as a Bicycle taxi person. He had to put a fair amount up front to buy a few "taxi's", then hired some other guys to run those while he ran his own. The hours were not 9-5, more like 5pm - 1am. With the other people in his employ he was able to take time off and the like.

Of course he had to put in physical work and dedication to the company. At the end of the summer he sold his taxi's to a competing company and walked away with just over $50,000. I think he put down $20,000 initially, to buy all 4 bikes and carts. I don't remember what he paid his employees. They worked for commissions or something, I don't recall the exact business model.

He did this by just driving people around on a bicycle towing a cart. You got to work with interesting folk, and get fit doing it. Plus you made money. It's a win-win!

that sucks man! Sorry to hear that. I know how geeked you were about that job.

Oh, it's not bad (yet). Like I said, this is a huge "first time in the US" project and everyone is traveling trying to wrap it up and learn about it. I've been told that the travel will be 25% or less overall, which isn't terrible (not great but not terrible).

Once this job is done, I'll be in the office for the better part of 2 months (jury duty during June! ) so it should get better as for the "initial" travel.

The main point I was making is that employers are in the drivers seat right now and are getting more and more from their employees while paying less and fewer benefits.

I'm actually still pretty "geeked" about the job and it's interesting stuff....just a little much travel (but that's just because I came in at a high intensity time). The funny thing is that I was scheduled to be in Idaho on a 2.9 million dollar project the next two weeks and the other engineer with me was scheduled to go on vacation, leaving me to put on the final runoff show by myself, lol. They finally realized that it's not the best thing to leave the "new guy" there alone with corporate executives trying to run off a full sized automated warehouse, lol. I now have others that will be with me!

Are there jobs that pay great and only work from 8 to 5? Sure....but employers are in control for now and they seem to be demanding more and more. The new norm is "I'm happy to have a job" and employers know that...and take advantage of it fully.

Can you do the same job for a better place that doesn't keep you on call?

Move inland and work at Sharon Harris and you can stay at my place for a while.

Move from Generation to Power Delivery, most of the jobs engineers do can wait till the next day not saying you won't have to work any overtime, but you wouldn't have to do schedule outages etc....You would probably have to work the occasional "storm outage restoration," but that usually only happens a couple of times a year.

In this economy, you should be happy and satisfied simply having a well paying job.

DoD type job. I make a little above that and have only been with the company for a little over a year. Try Lockheed, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, etc. Raytheon just won a huge contract and are hiring like crazy.

Nope. Plenty of people make that working a regular 40 hour week. I make more than that five years out of college.

Education field administration jobs come to mind. I'm sure some of them are hard working but many of them get payed 70-100k and more for 9-5 type jobs.
