Help me out please...

Hi,
I am gonna buy a new laptop for school. I also play alot of games so I would like a fairly decent graphic card in it. I am looking at a Dell XPS M170 with a nvidia 7800 GT. I was just wondering what you guys thought about his computer or if you have any other recomendations when it comes to laptops?

Looking for a Cpu that is at least 2.GHz
Ram at least 1GB
Graphic card at least nvidia 6800
60 gig hard drive 7200rpm


Also I see on the Dell XPS M170 that I am looking at (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/product...snb_m170?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn)
That the top CPU I could get is only a 2.26 GHz.

Now I know that the first generation of Dell Laptops came with a 3.0 GHz CPU. I was just wondering why did they down grade on the newer model? Is there something special about the Pentium M that is offered with the computer?

Do some reading on the M chip. That chip is alot more powerful than a P4 3.0.

So the M chip 2.0 GHz is better than a 3.0 GHz

The PentiumM 2.26 would likely fall in the range of a Pentium 4 3.6-3.8, likely challenging a Athloon64 4000+.

A base PentiumM 1.6 will fall somewhere between a P4 2.4-2.8.

I think we've just been reminded why AMD and Apple have had a harder time selling their products.

You've got your answer, but to clarify a bit: a Hertz (Hz) is just a cycle. It doesn't say anything about how much work gets done in that cycle!

BTW OP, I am curious on why you are willing to put down $3000 + on a laptop, and take our links and our word for it as far as performance? Why rely on us to provide you that information? Seems to me when you are spending that much, you should probably do some of your own homework. As far as you asking for links, oh I don't know how about intel.com for a start?

Cross checking info people post's a lot easier than looking up the stuff yourself: he never said he'd take info off this forum without doing due diligence. Especially if you're relatively new to the computing world or used to just using it to play games/MS office.

I am looking at high end notbooks becasue my parents are gonna buy me one for graduation ......

I looked a Sony Viaos and Alienware laptops but this Dell seemed to be the better of them. I was just curious about why they would downgrade the new version of cpu's on these laptops.......but know that you guys explained all that........I CANNOT WIAT TO GET THIS THING!!!!
