I'm trying to decide on a monitor and I need some help. My budget is $300 max, my system is equipped with a GTX 970, and here is what I know so far. I like the idea of a 1080p 144hz 24" TN panel, and I do game, but usually not FPS, mostly Fallout 4, witcher, skyrim, and that kind of stuff. But will I really even reach 144hz on a single card?

Would it be better to go with IPS or something and overclock for better color reproduction?

And now i've been looking at 2k monitors. I think 4k would be too much for my system, but what about 2k? 2560x1440 would sure look nice.... i'm so confused. Any advice is appreciated!

Hi,
at this moment all panels have their pros & cons.
From my experience I can say TN has better response time, but bad viewing angles. If you like watching movies with your friends in your monitor & they sit on the sides, it's not a good choice.
Now with IPS, it has better viewing angles. They had bad response times, but there are already new models which also have nice response time. With colors, to be honest I didn't notice big difference on my both monitors. Probably my AH-IPS monitor has better colors, but not that much, that I can see difference clearly (in my opinion). My old TN display also had quite good colors. Now about minuses of IPS. Despite fact, that they have better color reproduction & viewing angles, they suffer from well known "IPS glow" issue, which my old TN apparently didn't have. And it's mostly seen on dark areas, so black color was better on my TN. Playing games like Killing Floor 2 or Amnesia on IPS sucks, because they are quite dark games & this glow is just killing me. To show what I mean, simply watch this:

However I can't say if all brands & models suffer from this issue, maybe some of them have less "glowing", but on my large 2560x1080 UltraWide Philips monitor, I can say it's glowing on dark areas.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting or forcing you to get TN, but just I want you to know that there are no perfect monitors at this time & all they have their pluses & minuses.

I bought a pair of 27" QNIX QX2710 2K monitors for $250 each. They aren't the best quality units but the panels themselves are Samsung PLS, and they look excellent. I haven't gamed on them yet but I look forward to it. Therefore I can't really say how games look on them vs. a 1080p TN.

The downside is you can only get 90hz out of them I believe, but the extra screen space compared to 1080p is quite nice.

I have a pair of Asus VG248 displays. 144 hz, 1 ms GTG, 1080p, TN, DP. Best gaming monitors I've ever owned. You can routinely get them on sale for ~$200/each.
