It's JUST for the summer, so I'm not really taking the long-term into consideration at this point.

I am in Nashua and it's a tiny little town, came here from Chicago suburbs and it's a huge difference in scenery. Boston is drivable distance, but I didn't find it very accessible.

Any fun for a college student?

That is a decent idea...would be cheap too. If you've always lived in the Midwest I don't think Wash DC would be a giant change in scenery.

I'd rate more like Bellevue, Nashua, Fernley, Sterling. No reason to put DE on your list. Fernley will be hot but the mountains are right there for weekend activities if you like outdoor stuff. Otherwise put Sterling higher if you're a city boy.

Actually Fernley does sound cool, too. I do like the outdoors, but I would like to be near a sizable city so that there's enough to do (I've lived in the middle of nowhere for most of my life). What is Delaware like? I just figured the east coast would be different somehow.

Gonna give another point to Bellevue. That whole area is packed full of outdoor activity. Its got trees, rivers, streams, lakes, mountains. Tons and tons of hiking trails. Kayaking, rafting, etc.

Pick their Kentucky plants. I know it's the middle of nowhere, but that's where they ship out literally EVERYTHING.
.

Lexington, KY isn't the largest city but it's definitely not the middle of nowhere.

As for Amazon here, I generally don't like that portion of town (Amazon, UPS and Fedex hubs basically on the same street -logistics). Lexington is a nice town though....other than traffic sucks (relatively speaking).

How are you going to live for the summer?

You might want to consider the cost of living in those cities as well...unless someone else is footing the bill for you...There's going to be a HUGE difference in the cost of rent between many of those...as well as the cost of utilities unless it's included in your rent.

I'm sure he's getting paid... I really wouldn't worry even for Seattle. If he lives with others then it can cheaper, but of course... living alone will cost more. If he just lives out in Bellcrapue, then it would be even cheaper (And more convenient traffic wise...).

Everyone who is saying Bellevue sucks is just trying to keep you out. I was there twice and both times it was absolutely gorgeous.

Visiting is fine, but last I checked they had third worst traffic and the weather sucks. Sure you can go to PAX every year...

Avoid bellevue, that place is a shithole. I vote for New Castle because its close to White Castle.

lol. Bellevue is a very affluent city, go look at the statistics. What makes you think Bellevue is a shithole? Bellevue has more Mercedes and BMW's per square foot than just about anywhere.

If you do choose Bellevue, you would also be very close to Amazon headquarters, so you may have a chance to meet some of the higher ups at Amazon which could help down the road career wise.

The median income and home price for Bellevue are $100,410 and $467,500 respectively. Yep, a real shithole.

I've traveled all over the world, there is no place better than Washington state in the summer. From your list you'd be an idiot not to pick Bellevue.

If only summer would start for us...

But I agree, when summer does come around the days are truly epic and people around here tend to make the most of it. Besides, no true Washingtonian lets rain slow them down.

BTW, have you ever heard someone describe Bellevue as a shithole?

Never heard Bellevue described as a shithole. When I hear that I think the person has never been there. Worst that could be said for Bellevue is its suburban with a capital S, too clean, too corporate, too cookie-cutter townhouses and condos. But if you're there for the summer, it just means you're closer to the mountains, and Seattle is 20 minutes away.

or just live in Capitol Hill or Queen Anne or some other place with a lot of young people, and commute to Bellevue.

May be a little one sided, I was born there and the family lived in a pretty shitty neighborhood.

Same thing goes with everywhere else, if you have money, the place is great but if you dont have any, your could be in the shitter. However this was 20 years ago so things may have changed (somewhat).

Lived in Bellevue from 2005-2010 and let's just say I most likely know more about the company in question than anyone else in this thread.

I would either pick Bellevue or Coffeyville for career development purposes, depending on what you want. Bellevue is just across the water from the corporate offices in South Lake Union. Coffeyville is one of the biggest Amazon centers in the country and it pilots a lot of the process improvements and gets a lot of the executive visits and attention.

Things have changed a TON even in the last ten years. What neighborhood did you live in? Lake Hills is probably more run down than any other area in Bellevue at this point, but otherwise the whole thing is brand spitting new and polished. We got sick of the suburbs and moved out between Redmond and Fall City.

I was thinking Lake Hills too, but even then house prices were 200K plus last I checked, probably due to its great location and schools. I noticed a lot of new builds popping up in Lake Hills last time I drove through, the land is worth way more than the average 3 bedroom 1200sq ft home there.

I moved to Redmond in 1980, back when 520 ended in Bellevue at 148th if you can believe that.

Then why say with such certainty that it is a shithole? I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but a kid is looking for advice on an internship/career so I would hesitate to make such definitive statements unless I was absolutely certain.

Regardless, I would recommend the Bellevue location simply because it puts the OP in close proximity to Amazon HQ. If Amazon HQ was in BFE, I would recommend whatever location is nearest that.

Small time fun, maybe, the place feels like frat row at third tier state school. but it's expected, Nashua is not even 90K ppl after all, very towny town

On the other hand, 3 hrs drive to NYC, drivable distance to beaches (ocean warms up enough to swim at the beginning of July), cheap!

Once again -

Take the job in Fernley! You'll be just 3.5hrs drive from San Francisco. Don't live in Fernley, live in Reno its a 30-minute drive down I-80 and live in downtown Reno. Reno is home to University of Nevada - Wolfpack - its a college town as well.

Reno is a weekend hub for a lot of Californians - great food, great events, minor league baseball, Truckee River, hiking & mtn biking, and boating, and if you get here early enough I'm guessing you'll be able to ski until mid to late June!

Nevada also is a Zero Income Tax state and the Casino's pay the majority of taxes in Nevada so the property taxes are low so rents are low as well.

Screw the entire midwest and the oppressive humidity!
