Two PCs (both running win2k SP3), two 100% working NICs, a 100% working crossover cat5 cable, no connection. What am I doing wrong?

We need more info, when you said no connection, what do you mean, no connection to the internet or no connection between the 2 pcs? For the internet, how do you normally connect? via modem or ADSL, cable, perhaps? for the latter, are you in the same workgroup, same IP and submask's range? What about sharing files and folders?

When you answer some of this questions, then we will able to help you.

Best regards

First make sure that there is basic network connection between the computers. This is done by using Windows ping command (Do not know how to ping? Click Start / Help, and search windows help for ping.)

If there is no ping than you have Hardware, and or NIC Drivers problem.

If you can ping and the computers are not seen, then the issue is the sharing.

If you spend too much time and it does not work.

Install NetBEUI, better chance with NetBEUI since it does not use IP numbers.

Sharing for Win2000.

Thanks for the tips! Now to the info:

That's the funny thing: No connection between cards at the hardware level. Both NICs (w/ drivers) are perfectly fine and so is the cable, but they don't see each other (the connection says "unplugged"). I'll try NetBEUI, but I think the problem is interference or something like that.

What settings should I try with the IP setup?

How do you know that the crossover cable is "100% working"? Also, when you plug it in, does the link light on the nics turn on? It sounds like you have a bad cable, or a stright-though cable.

It was tested on two other systems at work. The light on the NICs turns on and off intermittingly, so yeah, it looks like a hardware (cable) problem. Can I test the cable without a computer to make sure it?s wired properly?
