help me with my dual boot..windows xp messed up!

i have windows 98 and windows xp dual booted on my hard drive. i tried to plug in my dvd-rom while the computer was on just to see what would happen, and it didnt break or freeze, but it also did not detect the drive. so i went to add new hardware and added an ATA/ATAPI controller. i forgot all about it after it found the drive and started working, and when i restarted, i got to the windows xp logon screen, picked me, typed the password, then it blue screens with some error and restarts before i have time to read any of it. i got it to boot into safe mode a few times (it wont do that anymore either, it stops on the file agp440.sys) and i saw in device manager TWO Primary IDE channels, TWO Secondary channels, and TWO Intel "some numbers" ATA/ATAPI controllers. when i try to uninstall them, it doesnt ask any questions, the computer just restarts! im booted into 98 right now but since the xp partition is NTFS i cant fix it from here.

for the record, i tried uninstalling every device that had to do with IDE stuff, and each time, it either said "are you sure?" and i uninstalled, restarted, and it was the same...or it just restarted right on the spot!


ahhh help! i cant lose the info on this drive!

Did you try removing the DVDROM drive?

yes and that didnt work either i cant get into windows xp anymore, it just freezes/errors/stops at random places

well now we know..........try doing a search in the forums for repairing xp.

hm what do you mean now we know?

i thought i put that in my other post, oh well. how can i repair this? i dont think too many people have this sort of problem

We know that hot plugging and unplugging of hardware, except for USB, is risky.

just to see what would happen

guess it kind of like messes it up. as far as other people having the same problem , there have been quite a number people who have asked questions as to repairing an installation of windows XP. are you using system restore ? have you tryed booting from the cd and doing a repair installation ? FAQ's this might help also.

yeah but i didnt figure a cd-rom would hurt much since it isnt using it until i tell it to anyways, hehe
