Please don't get a Compaq, they're almost as bad as Hewlett-Packard. If you're gonna get a pre-built one, get a Dell or Gateway. You can always build it yourself though for a lot cheaper.

mmm... i think it's more appropriate to say that you can get what you want not what somebody thinks you want...

Hardly. If you have to buy all the software, eg: Win 2k, the cost rises SO MUCH. You also get ripped off on the cost of floppy drives etc, as the PC manufacturers buy in bulk = cheaper, but whenever I buy one, its at least £12.
There are a few advantages, but when building your own PC, cost is a disadvantage.

bacillus:

you should come and live in the uk for a bit... i've been here for over 10 years and everytime i go shopping for anything, i still find it expensive!! if you walk into a computer shop in the uk, chances are that a floppy drive will cost you between £10-15!! computer fairs are usually a little better - between £5-8... still no bone!

Also, he wants tech support. Don't get that when you build your own rig.

Actually, you can beat the OEMs at the pricing game, because they need to pay the wages of all the tech support people and such.
And Floppy drives are keepers from previous computers. I hate to think how many of them go to waste when people dump their computers after a long fulfilled life.

People, keep your parts. They can be good for stuff. :Q

I get it at the same place I buy everything else.. Buying one thing from 10 different retailers is a quick way to mount up an extra £100 for shipping remember.
It makes sence to buy things from one place, often orders over a cirtain amount get free shipping.

All the comps I built were cheaper than prebuilt ones,
but mainly because like stated before I recycled some of the parts, and all of the software.

Agreed... do NOT buy a compaq

2 years ago dell had the lowest time on hold for people wanting tech support. I dunno if they still are.

Yeah, thats ok if you can do it. Unfortunately for me, the kind of software I use is Adobe or Adobe related... very costly...
