okay i put this in the technical support form but i get no answers

last night my brother defragged my puter using "fix-it" program and my free hd space when from 4gigs to 900megs!!!!

what happened?
can i fix this?

help me please.

its just small 10 gigs, im upgrading it in a few weeks after my last exam but i want to know where my 4 gigs went!

is this normal?

First off, run Scandisk. Second, look around for in your temp file directories (c:\windows\temp for example) for large, useless files.

Probably lost clusters converted to files.
Look at c:\ for FILEOOOx.chk you'll probably find 4 gigs of them.

I think brandc is right.
Probably all the useless little chunks sitting around were all converted into files that take up large amounts of space.

Go do a search for those files and delete them.

oh, one thing... windows when using FAT32 has a bug in reporting the correct free space size occasionally. it's not really a problem, but your HDD can get full without you realizing it. scandisk (i use norton disk doctor) can fix that problem, but the bug is still there... the bug is only in reporting the correct size, and does not cause any data corruption...

stupid windows...

ONE way this bug can occur is: you deleted a huge file, say a CD image (500 MB), and windows crashed... clearly the HDD would have an extra 500 MB to use, but since windows crashed... that additional 500MB may not be shown.. but it's there....

anyway, i don't believe this problem is in w2k though...

Beat your brother, get rid of temp files, run Scandisk to get the correct free space, run Windows defragment / NU speed disk.

okay thanks i got them back. but dont be impressed i found a thinggy in windows that said disk clean up and there were like 4 gigs of some useless files (like temp ones).

back to my downloading
