I had a gift on my door step today. It was a dead mouse with a chunk missing from its' back. My cats stay inside, so I'm guessing it was one of the visitors. That's fine. One less to get inside. Mouse season is irritating.

Mice can be very destructive. They like to chew wires in attic spaces causing a fire hazard and destroy the effectiveness of insulation causing heat loss. For every one you see, there are at least half a dozen you don't see. Take a look in your attic space. If you see evidence of mice (droppings, nesting etc.), call the exterminator.

the one on the right looks like it'll cut me in my sleep.

He's actually a big baby most of the time, the orange guy in the back is built like an Offensive Lineman.

They both are good at catching Palmetto bugs etc down here, we don't have much of a mouse problem.

This was my mouser cat up north years ago, the pic is from when he was getting old, probably about 17.

Bill was about half the size of the other two guys, but I used to keep a scoreboard on the fridge years ago when I had a basement on the ones he'd leave in the middle of the kitchen floor when I came home for treats.

He'd usually get at least one a day.

Miss that little cat, he was cool as hell.

Yeah I get the occasional mouse in my attic, I have no idea how they're coming in. I have monitored snap traps and around this time of year I catch 1 or 2.

I think it should be code to use BX wiring in attics. If I was wiring a house from scratch that's what I would do. Now that I have blown insulation (which is basically shredded newspaper) I'm a bit more worried that mice start chewing up wires. I suppose the fibreglass insulation and drywall below would act as a fire retardant but that's a moot point once the wood structure catches on fire. Almost makes me want to put fire detectors in the attic. Attic is a pain in the ass to get to though. That's why my mouse traps are monitored. I only go up there if I get a notification.

Blown insulation is pretty safe. The danger comes from the paper back on batt insulation. The other issue is the short cuts that so many builders take in addition to foolish mistakes made by owners doing renovations.

Another problem with mice in the attic is chewing through vapor barriers allowing hot moist air into attic spaces. If you also have inadequate air flow, it will cause ice damming in cold climates and encourage mold growth.

No paperback insulation for me so guess I'm fairly good then. Only vapor barrier plastic directly over the drywall. Any electrical would be within the fibreglass anyway. Hopefully it would just spark out and smother a bit then die due to lack of oxygen and other combustible material, if a mouse was to chew it.

Either way I definitely do need to get my mice issue under control and figure out how they're getting in. I figured I had solved it last year but guess not.

In addition to the possibility of electrical fires, electrical runs tend to be ganged together. That means a short in one circuit can cause a problem by melting through the line next to it. Do you have any pot lights? If so, do they all have proper box surrounds? Do you have any hidden electrical junctions? I've seen so many screwed up electrical issues over the years. Over loaded circuits, junctions with just wire caps on and no box, cut wires just hanging that are still live and it goes on and on.

No pots, but some regular ceiling fixtures. Thankfully most of my electrical is half decent and there's actually not that much electrical in the attic other than lights. Some of them even have the power feeds at the switch so the wires arn't live till the switch is turned on. Though I don't think they're all this way.

Either way I'll definitely need to get to the bottom of my issue. I also keep forgetting that I should setup some traps in the other attic too, I have two as it's a split level house. Not sure if the other attic gets any but may as well be proactive, and I already have some wiring going near that area for my temp sensor so I have some extra wire pairs I can use for the trap alarming system.

If you have any problems like high energy bills accompanied by rooms which are cold in the winter or, hot in the summer. The fastest way to tell what's going on is to rent a FLIR camera.

Been wanting to rent one actually. When it will be further into winter and into -20's I'll probably do it then, probably the best time to see issues.

I do find it cold in the lower part of my house, I suspect it's the patio door and kitchen door but could be a break in the vapor barrier somewhere too.

Funny thing is, I caught a mouse for the first time in almost a year a few weeks after putting away my air conditioner in the closet which has the attic hatch where my mouse traps are. Coincidence?
