Question Help - Monitor loses signal randomly while gaming (computer still keeps running)

I have a GTX 3090 card

randomy, every now and then while gaming my monitor suddenly loses signal

i can tell that my computer keeps running fine but i have no signal on my monitor

i have tried connecting the HDMI cable to another monitor when this happens and same thing

i need to cold restart my machine each time

is this a defective card ?

i have run performance checks on my card and everything seems fine - both fans are working fine and temperatures are ok

Why are you using HDMI? Doesn't your monitor support DisplayPort?

High speed HDMI is preferred i thought for this monitor

I think with a RTX 3090 you may be right. Looks like it has DP 1.4a and HDMI 2.1.

Since it happens on another monitor try another ultra high speed HDMI cable. I'd DDU the drivers and fresh install the latest too.

What resolution are you gaming at? Does it match the monitor res?

Can you describe how exactly you can tell your PC keeps running properly? Do you still hear sounds from the games, can you still perform actions in those games that result in audible feedback?

Again, more details would help a great deal. Have you tried connecting the 2nd monitor after the 1st monitor went blank, during the same session? Or did you replace the 1st monitor, started playing, and experienced the same "blackout" event?

I recently had a friend experience a somewhat similar situation, system would freeze while gaming, no video out, PC was still running but OS was crashing. System had been fine for a year, GPU was the 3090. The LED near the power connector of the GPU would start blinking for a while during this event. Since it was an inexpensive attempt, friend bought a new 12HPWR cable to replace the adapter that came with the card. The new power cable fixed the issue entirely.

If you're certain the system is still functioning normally after the "blackout", checking with other video cables is probably your best shot other than testing with another GPU. If your CPU has an iGPU the best idea would be to make sure it is properly configured and maybe have another monitor hooked through the iGPU to see what happens when you lose signal on the main one.

However, if the system actually hangs (so fans and light are running, but OS is no longer responding), then check power delivery to your 3090. A new cable from your PSU maker is a relatively inexpensive purchase, especially if you're still using an adapter.
