help msn wont shut off, even when im not signed in.

I have looked through all the options. and have all auto start options disabled in outlook express and interntet explorer and msn messenger.
It just keeps on going. People know I am online even when I havent signed in. When i have no messenger icon in the tool bar people can see me online.
I had msn messenger on the taskbar, bottom right hand corner of the screen, with a x on it saying I wasnt signed in. I hadnt signed in either. And some one sent me a message. This thing just keeps going, How can I shut msn messanger off. Any one?

There are some programs that require MSN to run. I dont even use MSN but if I use outlook express it will show on the taskbar.

That's not MSN Messenger, it's Windows Messenger. They introduced a bug in later builds of 4.7 (and now v5.0) that allows it to run as a process...meaning, you have no idea it's even running (no user interface whatsoever), but it is running, and you set up either MsnMsgr or WinMsgr to automatically log you on at some point in the past (yes, both will use the same account to auto-logon, regardless of which client you used).

Start->All Programs->Windows Messenger, then click Tools->Options->Preferences and uncheck "Run when Windows Starts" and "Allow to run in the background"

yep, MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are basically the same thing except MSN Messenger is the downloadable version of it. the other came installed with Windows. make sure the option to not run when Windows starts is set in both of them.

Actually, the version of Windows Messenger that shipped with XP Gold, and the version that shipped with SP1, cannot even logon...you still need to dowload the latest build of v4.7 (via Windows Update) or v5.0.

In addition, WinMsgr v5.0 can also be downloaded and installed on W2K. However, unlike XP, you cannot have both WinMsgr and MsnMsgr installed at the same time, much less running side-by-side.
