My brother-in-law has 3 computers: 1) Labtop w/ win98 2) one w/ win 2000 for kid to play games 3) one w/ win 2000 for him and wife to surf the web. He was on a dial up until recently when I talked him into Adelphia Power Link (cable ISP) and a US Robotics Router/print server.
Hooked it up and everything is cool EXCEPT He can not use his labtop to connect to his work server. So now here is his kid playing high bandwidth video games, his wife downloading God Knows What at the speed of light, and him, the one who pays for all this, still fetching his email with his slow ass dial up! :| Somethimes it takes him 30 minutes to get one email open.
My question is, he is trying to connect to his work server through Novell VPN. When we use the LAN connection, we get to the VPN no problem. But, when we open up his work applications like Outlook, it gives the message, NO MicroSoft server available.
Now I have been reading about VPN's and DHCP's and NAT's and PPTP's and DMZ's and I am thourghly confused. My head is swimming I read that there may be some kind of a problem with public and private IP numbers, but I was wondering if someone can help me. Can you either explain to me (without a ton of acronyms) step by step how to configure the DMZ or Virtual Server or PPTP so that we can connect OR why this is so hard to do, OR what I can do to fix this problem? Will I have to eat the router and try to network the computers together via ethernet OR a hub? what am I to do? I am responsible for the $100. router + the cable and I want it to work damit
