a lawn mower? after that go to a local nusery and ask they will know better than anyone ( or should), or a local lawn serivce, or if you an extention office they would be a good choice as well.

A lot of it depends on the type of grass you have. I have St. Augustine, which requires specialized weed killers.

Scotts sells crabgrass pellets, but I think that you have to have it down before the seeds germinate. When I get that stuff I usually take a seat in my lawn and hand pull it out...or I just kill it all with Roundup and then re-sod the area (key is to catch it when it is small.

For the other weeds Scotts Turf Builder works pretty well.

Find out what the native grasses are for your area and plant those. As natives, they should be able to out compete the weeds (assuming the weeds aren't native). If the "weeds" are native then enjoy your easy-to-maintain native prairie.

Gasoline and matches. Start by making pretty patterns and then just go for broke.

Anybody elese neglect their yard like I do? I would say at least 50 percent of my "yard" is crabgrass or weeds......Its all green and when you wow it down it looks pretty good from a distance......

If I used scotts turfbuilder on mine I would have to re-seed most of the lawn lol........

I've always had good success with Scott's Bonus S, weed and feed - but as said above - it depends on what type of grass you have - I live in Florida.

I'm having the same problem, but I have centipede grass. From what I understand, since it's the winter now, I have to wait until spring to put anything down since it's in dormant right now. I hate crabgrass!

Depending on some things, the best strategy isn't necessarily to kill the weeds, but to make it so the grass is given the best chance to grown. Usually "weeds" grow over grass when the nitrogen in the soil is low. Fertilizing will usually fix this.

Right now your yard is an arcade and you want to attract seniors but are frustrated with the number of teens you get. You can either sit outside with a shotgun and pick off the teens that show up, or you can turn the arcade into a bingo hall.

I'm in Canada, I can't even see my lawn anymore. Snow does a pretty good job with the dandelions, crab grass and weeds.

You have failed. You must now kill them with fire. I recommend a flamethrower. Once yard is a nice crispy shade of black, reseed.

Determine what you have growing and work to encourage that.
Crabgrass needs to be removed manually and completely. Removing the tap root is the only way it's gone.
If you have a "Bermuda Grass" type of lawn, ANY crabgrass control product will kill that as well. Be careful or you can screw it up real quickly.

Read all product safety stuff, the pet you save may be your own.

Lawn type Weed control products only REDUCE the possibility of "weeds" establishing themselves. A healthy lawn will resist efforts of infiltration simply by it's mass.
Overseed bare spots by scratching the surface up rough, seeding and covering with a "Lawn Topper". Keep moist until sprouting occurs. Overlapp edges by a foot or more to blend.
Now is the time to overseed thin spots and add amendments for a richer, more lush lawn in the summer.
If you rent / buy a pluging areator, you can areate the lawn, add compost to amend, Rake/ Roll flat, Overseed Entire lawn, Spread out Lawn Topper , Rake for level, Water throughly.
The dark color of lawn toppers is designed to hold heat during the winter months to help germination of grass seeds.

Damn Kids...Get off my yard!

Go to HD and buy a gallon of Roundup. Mix with water and spray over the weeds. In a week the problem will be gone ... but so will the rest of your lawn.

Problem solved ... no need to thank me.

Nuke the entire lawn from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

A lot will depend on the status of your lawn. If it's a manageable size, I would recommend removing all the offenders manually then prepare the soil and reseed. If you can't do it manually, you may need to use a chemical(s) to kill it all then till the area, prepare the soil and reseed/sod/etc.

LOL this about sums up my situations to the T. Actually went to HD and they didn't have Scott turfbuilder. Guy said come back in the spring and we'll have it. Did get some weed/crabgrass spray and will see how that works but it hasn't done much for me in the past.

first you have to check local bylaws. You may not be able to use herbicide/pesticide.
