Kepp in mind that I am working with an assumed dead CPU and getting ready to get it replaced. See this thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1846840&enterthread=y

Alright, Well I was taking the HSF off my CPU (AMD 3200+ 939) and I noticed that it was stuck on there pretty good. I gave it a good pull/twist and it finally came off. When I looked down at the CPU socket, I noticed the CPU wasn't there... Looked at the bottom of the HSF and saw the CPU stuck with a bunch of Arctic Silver 5. Now I'm worried that screwed my socket up. You aren't supposed to be able to pull out the CPU if the lever is down.. I put the CPU back in (all the pins are intact), put the lever down and tried to see if I could pull the CPU out and I couldn't. When I pulled the HSF off, the lever was down. Did I really mess my socket up? And also, I got a very, very, very small amount of Arctic Silver 5 on one of the rows between the holes on the CPU socket. Is this a danger to my CPU?

Thanks in advance.

No, I have seen this done before against my recommendation. Usually when the hsf is hard to get off you have to be very careful of such things. As to the AS on the socket, how the hell did u let it get there?!

It's very small amount of Arctic Silver 5, thin as, if not thinner, than a hair and long as about half of a grain of rice. I'm not really sure how it got there.. So, Is it a danger to my CPU?

Thanks in advance.

Pretty much everyone with a Socket 939 CPU has done that before, it happened to me when I was attempting to remove the stock heatsink to put on an XP-120. The secret is to always pull straight up to avoid bending the pins (at least when it's possible, my Thermalright heatsink has to come off at an angle because of the location of the mounting clips). As far as I know, no one's ever damaged anything from this other than maybe accidentally bending pins on the CPU. As for the Arctic Silver, use the highest purity isopropyl alcohol you can find and a Q-tip to clean it off and then heat the general area of the socket with a hair dryer to make sure it all evaporates. You need to use the highest purity isopropyl alcohol because otherwise you may get some residue left in the socket.
