Hi,
I am having trouble with my new Dell 2405fpw.. it works fine in 1920x1200 in windows, but when I trry to run games in that res (Half Life 2, LO:MAC) the screen goes grey with lines across it. I am running a 7800GT over DVI and driver version 8.1.9.8. Thanks!

Screenshots? My first response is blame the games themselves, most games aren't designed to run at hi-res anyway.

screenshots look perfect (doesn't match what I'm seeing on the screen) --- the problem seems limited to the display??

Yep, if the screenshots aren't showing the problem, then the issue is the display. RMA?

Does it do the same thing using analog? 1920x1200 is definately pushing the limit for single link DVI, but if it displays the desktop, it "should" do the same for the games unless they change the refresh rate and throw it out of sync.

Screenshots only show the framebuffer, the issue could be the card or drivers easily.

same thing happens with DVI and VGA
the display works perfectly in windows desktop 1920x1200
seems like maybe a driver issue?

The display doesn't know the difference between 2D desktop and 3D games, and it has the same issue with both analog and DVI, I'd say you could rule out the display and cables.

Both the games you list are DirectX games (IIRC with LO:MAC,as I don't have that game), have you tried any other games? Opengl?

You had a different display before on that same rig, but assume you've never tried that resolution gaming before?

thanks for all the suggestions
after a lot of hair pulling, i figured out it is somehow related to using anisotropic filtering with the high res? If I set AF to "application" all my games work in 1920x1200, otherwise they all break. very wierd but for now I will play with no AF and maybe look into it a little more

HL2 natively supports 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 formats, which includes 1920x1200

I almost always set my drivers to application, and use the in-game settings for each game. HL2 allows for up to 16xAF in-game, so you shouldn't have to live without AF unless its truely and AF issue with the card/drivers.

I set it to 16x and have high quality AF enabled in the drivers for HL2 but I also don't play that high of resolution, don't play LO:MAC so I don't know what's available ingame. A 7800GT would be a bit of a shame to play without AF at all.
