Help! New computer doesn't work anymore!

I just got a new computer...Asus A7V133, 1.0 ghz thunderbird, and 256 megs PC133 Micron. I have had it running since last wednesday. I have been getting frequent crashes and have slowly been improving on it, installing new drivers and tweaking here and there. Then i noticed the temp. 52 deg C! So i took the cpu out, cleaned the artic silver off and put a much less amount on. I had a friend put the silver on before and he used WAY too much. I put just enough in the die and popped it back in the machine.
Well, now I am computerless. It does not post, does not run, does not do anything! I plug in the power and it just sits there with the fans running. It usually powers up for a few seconds and them powers down. Nope, it just stays on and nothing happens. Did i just make myself a $200 keychain?

Hmm. I would double check all the connections first.

Did you put a thin layer of arctic silver on?

if you know where the jumper is that resets the bios i would trigger it on, could be that the computer messed up its intial settings and will not boot till reconfigured.

52 degrees C ... that's only 125 degrees F... I don't even have a temperature sensor on my board, so I dont' have much of a frame of reference ... But that doesn't seem extremely hot to me ... Actually sounds about what I'd expect CPUS to be ... Maybe I'm just ignant..


I don't suppose you have a functioning CPU you can use to test it ...
Do the usual ... break down the system to its least number of parts ..
Reconnect all connections to verify them ... Reseat all remaining cards into their slots ... After that, try to swap out parts known to work ... Also try your parts in a working computer ... I know we can't always have this luxury... Other than that... pray to the computer gods.
