Ran an X2 3800 and 4850(now in new Rig) for a year or so. It certainly has benefited a lot from my recent upgrade, but it worked very well in most games with the X2 3800.

well it would work with a P4 too but that doesn't mean it would be a wise choice. it would be silly as heck for him to buy a new power supply for a 4850 when a gt240 will give him basically the same playable performance in most games at 1280x1024.

True enough. Just providing some experience with the combo.

UPDATE.. I was ready to get the gt240, and was given a msi-5750, 1gb gddr5, by my brother in law.

so...i kinda gotta try n make this work in my current system. again..my main concern will now be my power supply. will my current psu not be able to run it.. i really dont know for sure what ps i have. is there any way to tell without opening the case...

and..in the end, if i do need to upgrade the psu.. i need some cheap options that will work.. thanks again for any input

The 5750 uses like 15w idle and 86w at load.

Now 86watts under 100% use isnt really that much, chances are good your PSU should be able to handle this fellow.

a 240 uses like 69-70 watts... so its only a 16watt differnce at most. As far as I can tell (from googling 5750 vs 240) they appear to be about equal in performance, with a slight egde to the 240.

So..even if my system only has the generic hp psu.. it may be ok..for 5750. does the 5750 need a prticular connector on psu, or will most psu's come with what i need

Sometimes the graphics card itself will come with the converter. Look at photos/reviews of the one you plan to buy and see if they include a converter.

Your PSU should be able to run the 5750 just fine. I say put it in and see how it works out. You'll never know unless you try anyways.

maybe not. best case scenario is that he has a 300 watt psu that was unrealistically "rated" for 19 amps on the 12v when brand new. 4 years later and I guarantee that psu can not make anywhere near that in realistic conditions. a system with a 5750 and 3800 X2 could easily come close to maxing what that psu can now make. and if it is a 250 watt psu then there is no way this will work.

I would get a cheap psu with at least 350 watts with a 20 amp 12v rail.

Something like this will work.

400 watts 2 15 amp rails for 50$ shipped.

I've actually had a 300W power supply that worked for 1 year and then suddenly blew up. It didn't damage any PC components but it went out with a loud "pop" and a burning smell. It was only powering an Athlon XP1600+ and a Radeon 8500. So I got lucky that I only had to replace the PSU However, sometimes it can damage other components (or even slowly result in components degrading over time due to irregular supply of current). It's impossible to say how good the quality of the 300W power supply in the 1700n is. I suppose if it has 20A on 12V rail, you may be OK.

This maybe a little out in left field but I was wondering where the OP lives?
Seeing he's in a wheel chair, income is tight but he's a gamer enough to come here I wonder if anyone nearby might throw him some excess hardware.
Surely someone has a PSU lying around, perhaps even a last gen video card etc?
It would be uber cool to lay some stuff on him or even put something together that he could use.

OP you should get a new PSU. I did a bit of googling and found out that the a1700n either comes with 300w bestecs or 300w deluxes ... since it's a delux, it almost certainly can't even do 200w real watts, especially considering it's god-knows-how-old now (I would rate it at 160-180w), so even if that hd 5750 is very easy on power consumption, it's still too much for your psu ... I would bet that any discrete video card is ...

You could get yourself something like this

Or even something less powerful, but I say you're talking a big risk if you plan to keep that deluxe...

Are you local? I live in Philly, if its worth it to you (shipping?) I'll install the parts for no charge for a fellow member. No problem buddy.

Edit: I have heatware and some Ebay feedback to show I'm on the up and up and not trying to rip you off . No worries there.

Edit 2 : I also have a 2 month used Enermax 500 watt psu I'll install for ya for nothing if that helps with the wieght of your shipping cost.
Save you money on a psu also!

hi guys...thnx again for the help and offer happy..

actually, the pc guy left bout an hour ago. put in a new psu 580w and my msi 5750.. all is well graphically. however..

after he left, i noticed a red x thru my sound icon on my start bar. says no audio output device is installed. i looked in my control panel..i normally use realtek audio from my motherboard.. when i dble clik on realtek icon in control panel..nothing happens. when i go to device manager..under sound..its showing ati high definifion audio device. under sound in control panel..its showing ati hdmi output. but, says not plugged in.

obviously, the new ati 5750 has disabled or overridden my realtek audio. any ideas how to fix this.. ive got better graphics now..but no sound..help..

go into bios and make sure onboard audio is set to "on" not "auto".
