Hey all,

Just wanna know what kind of action should I take in regards to this...

I bought a KT600-a board from local vendor, bought a NEW retail 2400+ (266fsb) chip for another out of town.

Plugged every critical component in (vidcard, ram, PSU, CPU, power switch). Got video post, and ~1 second of bios post, then it shutdown. Swapped out PSU, Ram out (video working fine cause I got AGP post) and same problem. Took off Heatsink and CPU was toasted around one edge beside processor... After swearing some, put in another... my athlon 1ghz testbox chip... Same thing, but the damage to chip was more severe.

I am pretty sure the mobo is defective now and what should I do about my chips? I know the next board I want from them is to be tested, but who pays for these dead chips? In particular the new 2400 ($115US)? Should I claim it from AMD or company who sold me the chip? Should the place I bought the Mobo pay for it?

(*#$*&(#(*&#(@&(*

Thanks to all that can help.

Third & fourth photos, that shed any light on it? Auto shutdown occurs because the CPU is overheating, and that's the usual reason.

Your old T-bird doesn't have auto shutdown, by the way, but your 2400+ does. Put your 2400+ together correctly and it may surprise you by being just fine. I know the sealant around the one edge can look like a burn, it might be deceiving you.

MechBgon,

I have put in in correctly, the stepped edge was nowhere near the socket. My old 1ghz chip was centered because of the paste mark it left from the cpu. I have never had any issues with the heatsink and that chip.

I took a look at the thermal pad on the sink (retail amd) of my new cpu and it was completely centered. That sealant mark... holy crap you may be right... It may still be alive. I thought the thermal shutdown wasn't implemented until the bartons.

You never really take detail of the physical traits of the processor until theres something wrong. I will try the Tbred-B again tonight.

Wish me luck. Thanks a bunch mechBgon, I may owe you a beer.

Worst case scenario... Any chance AMD/retail store would exchange or RMA that chip if I told them it never worked? Cause technically, it never did.

I also saw your heatsink clip video on your site... smooth... I have had a phobia of doing that ever since I damaged a mobo because the screwdriver slipped causing me to damage some motherboard traces as well as cut my knucke on the hs blades. Of course I had a awkward screwdriver (thick multi headed POS) as well as a cramped case... I acutally use a pair of pliers and my thumb to hook the sink on.

Ok... Ok...
Did the thing mentioned above... My Athlon 1800 is not garbage, but still no full post.

Gave up, punched some drywall, and few minutes later...

Changed projects and started to build a P4 Prescott machine for a buddy, and used the same power supply I had used with the KT800. The P4 board did almost the EXACT same thing. Powered up for a second then shut off. I now assumed it was a PSU issue. So, I plugged it into a third board (old atx board) and the cpu fan didnt even power on. Faulty Powersupply... Brand new PowMax is flakey! I thought I would walk into the place I bought it and slam it down on the table as being the cause of all my issues. But before I packaged everything up in a PowMax rage, I thought, hey, let see that KT800 power up, now that this thing was put away in its original packaging.

So, I got a buddy down the road to give me a workin' 350w and tried it again... SAME BLOODY THING. Post for 1 second with vid card post, and flickered Bios post before shutting down. Well, at least this time I could confirm the chip was not dead because I saw the bios read Athlon XP 1800 before it shut off. Tried it with a third 250 watt power supply to no avail. AMD stock sink is on processor properly (checked with flashlight), removed thermal pad and added arctic silver 5. After swapping out more ram, video cards and heatsinks... here is what I found.

No video cards installed = 3 beeps motherboard but stays on permanently
ANY AGP card in = The standard problem where it shuts after 2 seconds
PCI video in = No beeps, no video display (2 separate monitors), motherboard stays on permanetly

What are the chances that a new board AND a new 330w power supply was crap? Is this just bad luck? Have I angered the AMD gods?

I am gonna get the Mobo replaced. Any other suggestions? Reasons for this kruddy issue?

Thanks for any help or comments.

PS: Forgot to mention, No, I did NOT wear my Intel P4EE t-stirt while having my AMD troubles.

PowMax is the #1 trouble-making brand of PSU in my troubleshooting experience here. Fill it with dirt and plant a flower in it, then get a Fortron, Antec or Enermax or another proven brand, and I bet you'll get some better results

I know better for next time, my friend just wanted one of their cases beacuse it was eye catching and cheap. The PSU was just an added freebie.

Any help on the motherboard issues would be appreciated. Are there any other things I can do to try to get this damned thing working?
