As a house warming present for a buddy I wanted to get him a nice set of badminton (sp?) rackets and cocks (hehehe). Something nicer than the crap you get with a back yard set.

Anybody have any recommendations or where to get them? Only ones I've found locally are pretty poor quality wise.

If you want to play badminton like the pros then you need to get a really good racket. They cost between $5000 and $8000.

5 G's for a friggin badminton racket? Crap, tennis rackets don't even cost that much...neither do baseball bats, football gear, golf clubs, road bikes, skis, snowboards...

...

...

Other than motorsports, what other sports involve gear costing $5000?!?!?!?!!?!?

I was kidding.
I'd play badminton with a $10 set of rackets and the net. It's good enough.

I hope the 5K wasn't serious.

scuba?

Oh and badminton is a lot of fun. You can hold your beer AND play outside. What more could you ask for?

Will the 60 buck ones hold up or do you have to constantly re-string them?

-edit- looks like LOTS of goodies on sportmart. thanks for the links. 20 bucks for 12 cocks!!!!

hrm...possibly. If you have your own tanks, regulators, suit, etc. etc. it could cost that much. I recently saw a pair of goggles that have a HUD-like display you link to a dive computer so can see your depth, dive time, compass heading, time, etc. etc. floating in front of you. I think they were close to $2000 on their own, so $5000 could be reached...

Here are some quality rackets: Yonex, Prince, Victor, HL. Yonex is the most popular around here. I think in China where badminton is more popular, Victor is more dominating. I get my rackets from friends who go out of the country and bring them back. It costs cheaper and you get what you want: good rackets.

Anyways, if you want convenience search Yonex on ebay and pick out a racket. But you need to know whether your friend is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. The more advanced the player, the lighter the racket gets. They do this for a reason: to build up the muscles you need to play the game. So if your buddy is a beginner, go to a Big 5 and they have a pretty good selection of rackets with a good price (around $30 for a pretty light one too, Wilson brand). If your friend is intermediate to advanced, definitely don't go to sportmart and get him some crap that he probably will never use.

There are two types of rackets: one piece and two pieces. Two pieces are heavier because well, they're connected by two pieces from the shaft to the impact area of the racket. One pieces are much lighter. Get a one piece.

Here is a good place to start.

Edit: Forgot to mention the birds. DO NOT GET CHEAP SH*T!!! YOU CAN RUIN THE RACKETS. Get brand name birds such as Yonex or HL. Don't go to a swapmeet or Big 5 and pick up a bunch of $1 birds. They can get stuck inbetween the strings and ruin your racket. Unless your buddy hits like a pansey and the force isn't great enough for the birds to get stuck between the strings, then it's still not ok because it just cheapens the sport big time. Cheap birds don't fly right and ruins the fun of the game. My Big 5 usually sells HL birds. Those are acceptable birds.

thanks for the tips.

I would say we are below beginner as we make up our own rules...

Like if you spill your beer you lose a point. Hit one into the cooler = +5 points!

How about shuttle cocks?

I forgot to include that and made an edit above your post. Since you're beginners start out with a Big 5 racket that costs about $20-30. Get the lighter ones at Big 5. Sometimes the rackets are hard to find because badminton might not be as popular in the area you live in. One good racket I really recommend from Big 5 is the Silver/Blue Wilson one piece racket. It's fairly light and you can do smashes (Hit the birdie really hard and have it shooting at someone).

Get real feather birds when you get more advanced.

I would recommend getting Yonex, Prince, Victor, and Diamond. I have 2 Diamond rackets and 1 Yonex racket. You probably will never have to restring a Yonex or Diamond racket unless you are good. I haven't broken the string on my Diamond rackets yet and I've had them for 4 years.

ordered two prince vendetta raquets and two dozen shuttle cocks - one goose feather, one nylon. Figured it would be fun to see how the feather ones fly.
