yeah money doesnt really matter, but then again i wouldnt want you to point me to the most expensive one and say yeah its the best you know. being the most expensive is not always the best.

Do you need ATX? The Maximus V Gene is a nice little board. I'm thinking of building my next rig m-ATX because I never use multi-GPU.

if you're not gonna overclock why get a K processor? Why spend $200+ on a motherboard too?

because maybe in the future i might need to. There is a good saying "rather have it and not need it then to need it and not have it lol" but as of right now i dont see why i would need to OC with the specs i lay out, does OC hurt the processor or give it less life in the long run?

i usually overclock for fun just to see what my hardware can do then i put it to stock for 24/7
[or a reasonable overclock]

overclocking as long as you don't exceede safe limits for voltage and thermals, is not very harmful. I have a Q9550 that has been running at 3.8Ghz (overclocked from 2.83Ghz) 24/7 for 4 years. Still works as if it was brand new

danm thats crazy, so if im understanding this correctly people who usually have lower stock Ghz tend to overclock then those who have high stock Ghz?

If you are near a Micro Center at least get your processor and motherboard there and save a bunch over any other supplier. I am very pleased the Gigabyte board featured in my sig, only $139.99 at Micro Center. There are a bunch of threads ongoing that have asked the same basic question as yours and they are full of good info on many motherboards.
Good Luck in your hunt!

Mmmm...no not exactly.

Usually people were buying value chips that can overclock highly. 2.23Ghz CPUs that could go to 3.4Ghz etc. They cost maybe $200 where a 2.8Ghz CPU was $400 or something. So for half the money you can get the same performance through overclocking.

Now with i5 and i7 CPUs it's a little different. The i7 has hyper threading and that's basically what you pay for. 2500k/2600k and 3570k/3770k. The K means the multiplier is unlocked so you can overclock it easily. There are other CPUs available from Intel that are clocked higher than these out of the box but the price is higher.

After lots and lots of research, I ended up going with MSI Z77A-GD65 for my i7 3770K build. Budget was also a no issue for me, but the MSI had everything that I needed and seems to be reliable and OC's well. IMHO, no need to spend more $ for the GD85, if you don't need thunderbolt support. Good luck with your build!

also the asus rog v extreme per pre released spec's are keeping sli @ x8 , x8 by passing the plx chip , if that's the case running the formula is the better for sli only I guess.[minus 2-5 switching chips cut into the pci-e lanes.?]
http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/Maximus_V_Formula/
-expect the English manuals last I guess.

when you run in PCIe 1 it's x16 when you run in PCIe 2 it's x16 run both you get x8/x8 from the CPU (not the PLX). Remember the PLX chip introduces latency that the CPU does not have. The Extreme will run a dual card SLI setup off the CPU lanes and not off the PLX so you don't get the latency.
