Hey guys, Looking into getting a new desktop for gaming online mainly and just your everyday tasks maybe some photoshop but thats about it.

Which would be the better setup?

XPS 7100
AMD Phenom™ II X6 1075T
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 4 DIMMs

XPS 8100
Intel Core i7 870 (2.93GHz/8MB cache)
ATI HD 5770 Radeon
8 gig Ram

XPS 9100
Intel Core i7 930 (2.8GHz/8MB cache)
ATI HD 5770 Radeon
8 gig ram

Thanks guys!

not 100% sure but i think this is the best one if price doesn't really matter:

XPS 8100
Intel Core i7 870 (2.93GHz/8MB cache)
ATI HD 5770 Radeon
8 gig Ram

I support AMD but being that you can't overclock dell computers I'd have to go with the i7. You can always replace a video card but upgrading the X6 will be tough being that the AM3 platform is going to be replaced soon (as far as I know).

The last thing you want to do is rely on dell for bios updates and there's no telling at the moment what will be compatible with AM3 setups in the future.

Were you building yourself I'd recommend AMD, but if you really can't swing it stick with Intel. You'll have more power to play with in the long run provided there are no drastic changes in multi-threading that would benefit the x6.

Well I can probably swing upgrading the 9100XPS to include the ATI 5870. So that would be the best bet then for running games with good settings?

If you can get the XPS 8100 with the 5870, that would be the best setup (ignoring price).

Turbo Boost on the i7-870 is gonna help you more in games than the i7-930.

Yeah unfortunately the XPS 8100 only offers the 5770 as the highest selection choice.

None of the above, build your own just as good for 2/3rds of the price.

I've got to agree. With a little bit of research piecing together your own comp is the best way to go. Its really not hard and you can find some decent prices on stuff on random forums/newegg/tigerdirect etc. Not to much you'll gain a ton of working knowledge for the computer you build.

I wouldnt mind doing it with just getting the parts and having one my friends or co-workers help me with building it but I kinda need to finance it over 4-5 months with the No Interest from Dell.

If you need to finance it, maybe your priority shouldn't be buying a $1k+ gaming rig, pre-built or DIY....

Credz - Newegg has financing, too. They have the "Newegg Preferred Account" which is no interest if paid in full up to 12 months & they also have "Bill Me Later" which is no interest if paid in six months. I'm not trying to persuade you either way, just wanted to let you know.

I wanted a new system for when the game I want comes out so I can play it much better than with my current setup. I have almost all of it but the game is soon out. But still want a good setup that'll last me for a bit. Either way I do not need to justify anything to anyone. I'm just looking for some information.

Cruc thank you I didnt know they had a preferred account like Dell has. I will have to look into that. I do not know much about motherboards. If I could pick my parts I may go with the 1090t BE. What is a good MB to go with either processor?

AMD offers good bang for the buck with that X6, I would go for it! Paired with the 5870, the 5770 is not bad but only has 128-bit memory interface if I recall correctly. instead of the 256....

Personally I think the 5870 is overpriced right now being that you can get about the same performance out of an overclocked GTX 460 which costs nearly half the price. Dose dell offer 460's? The i7 870 is my choice though. I'd grab that, sell off the 5770 for 80 to 100 and get myself a GTX 460.

If that's to much work I doubt you'll be sorry you went with the AMD x6 or i7 920 paired with a 5870. You'll be good to go right out of the box.

In your case then I would probably go with the AMD, simple fact is for the most part AMD is just as good in most places and Intel. AMD tends to not be as pricey IMO though. Meaning if you needed to later on you could look into upgrading things and not have to sale a kidney. You could also try and take a look at a personal loan if you still wanted to go the route of building it yourself. You might be able to still save yourself some money even with a small interest rate.

Yeah I think I may go with the 9100 then if the 920 is the better processor. Either that or see about talking to a friend that may be able to help me with a build possible for around the same price since new egg has the no interest financing. I just need it for about 4 months then it'll be paid off.

don't get a 920 for online games, it's grossly overkill, get the X6 1090T with the best graphics, then you can OC it if you really want, but the cpu doesn't matter a lot in gaming, the GPU is much more important, also, what screen form factor are you using?

Ok thanks guys! If the parts list does not work out then I will probably just order from Dell. This is what I have... Does everything work together?

I would save money on the hard drive by going with a regualar WD black drive and put it into getting a ATI 5870 or Nvidia 470 GPU. A GPU is going to make a noticeable performance difference and WD blacks are reliable hdd's.

Other than that its a good build. I might go with a 1055 and save the cash over the 1090T and just overclock the 1055.

Hmm...ok!

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - OEM- $34.99

Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive- $87.99

GIGABYTE GV-R587UD-1GD Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity- $349.99

I forgot to add a sound card. Does that look better with the Hard Drive change and the upgraded video card? Still puts it just under $1300. Keeps it with in budget. Will everything work good together? This would be my frist build so I'm worried if everything would fit in the case and if I even got a good case. Would I be able to make USB 3.0 in this tower in the future if I needed to? It comes with 4 USB 2.0s

yea thats an awesome deal on the ram. i would replace the PSU as well, that TR2 is kinda junk as far as quality goes and you really dont need 800w. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256059. 75 for a good quality seasonic. if you want more watts get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256059. that one ends up being 10 bucks more, but its AMAZING on output quality and its 80+ silver rated so if you're paying your own power bill it will even out in the long term. theres a few threads in the PSU forums explaining how important a quality PSU is if you wanna check em out. that 750w silverstone is gonna give you more actual output power than the TR2 800w would have as well, due to the way the rails are balanced and the fact that its so much better built

Nice thanks guys! Im very new to this and appreciate all this awesome help. I added the ram and that saved me money!

For the powersupply that first for the seasonic that would be more than enough to run what i have good or do you think I should go with the one thats 10$ more? If I'm going to be great with the cheaper one then I would like to stick with that so everything would fit nicely into budget. If there are any other recommendations please tell me

i think the seasonic is just fine, which is why i recommended it. however if you're like me and you tend to expand outward on a box quickly, i would pick the other PSU. sounds like you arent as likely to do that, i just threw it out there to give you options. the big difference would be if you expect to go dual GPU later on, which the 620 would barely be enough for, while the 750 would give you room to spare and overclock the CPU. if you totally dont expect to go dual gpu, i would just get the 620 and call it a day. ooh and on the motherboard, i have that board, its a great pick and i wouldnt change it no matter what anyone tells you

ed: btw, the seasonic looks like it's on sale right now, dont know how long it will last though, but even full price its still a good buy. i built 5 boxes with the 520w version of that PSU and its super solidly built if you want a good PSU for long term reliability
