Help.. Problem with free space on drive with Windows XP

My operating system is Windows XP. I have an 80GB WD HD, and a 40GB WD HD.

I recorded a couple movies onto the 80GB HD using a TV card. I moved a few over to the 40GB for storage until I have time to work on them. I just went to move another over and it says that theres not enough free space....

There is 26.8GB free on the 40GB... and this movie (for now) is only 5GB. Why is it saying there is not enough freespace?

Any suggestions?

Not really sure. What file system are you using? You will need ntfs for video files over 4 gig. other types of files max out at 2 gig on fat32.

Ahh!.. that must be it. She was using Win 98 (fat 32).. and I upgraded her to win xp using a new HD..

The new HD is NTFS and the main (80GB).. and her new one is 40GB (still fat 32) and is a slave.

But that still doesn't seem right that it let her move a couple of movies until the 40GB reached 20 something GB's and said it was full.

Ill get her to move the other movies back to her 80 and format the 40 with ntfs.. and then try to move them back

you don't need to format the 40gb drive.

If it's a local HD, just do this.

Click Start - Run
type cmd
type convert /fs:ntfs d: (I'm assuming D: is your 40gb drive).

That should do it.....it'll state if it requires a reboot.

No data loss......and doesn't take too long to do either.

FAT32 has a max file size of 4GB. IF you try to copy a file bigger than 4GB to a FAT32 partition it will give you a free space error
