I don't exactly know if this is the appropriate place to write this but
there is an alumni from our medical school whose nephew is in desperate need
of a bone marrow transplant (more specifically one from an Asian-Indian).

Through the month of April there will be Donor drives at certain cities.
Please click on the link below for more information:

Hope for Rajan for more information

Despite the fact that the story of Rajan tugs at our hearts, there are some things about donating bone marrow that you should know before making a decision.

1)You must be between the ages of 18-60 to donate and once you are on the list you are on there until you turn 61, unless you call and spe cifically ask to be removed from the list.

2) Also you will be place on a national donor match list unless you specifically state that
you want to directly help Rajan (though there is a $25 dollar fee involved)

3)Lastly, as was mentioned to me today by someone who has had his/her bone marrow aspirated, it is not a painless procedure.

In spite of all of these warnings, bone marrow donation is a truly altruistic act. You have to potential to save someone like young Rajan's life. It's not everyday that we
get an opportunity to save a person's life so please think on this! Thanks for reading this and your support. If you are interested on more ways of helping out
please PM me and I will send you an e-mail address or telephone number so that you
may contact me.

Note: I apologize if this is not the appropriate forum to place this message
but if someone could direct me to where I should place this please let me know.
Thanks!

Bump =P Thx for reading guys.
Does it have to be an Indian?

normally for bone marrow, a very close match is needed, and the best chance is that it will come from the same ethnic background as the potential recipient.

How does bone marrow removal work?

There are 2 ways:

1) Involves actually removing bonemarrow. This generally means a proper anaesthetic, during which a needle and syringe are used to extract the liquid bone marrow from the pelvic bones and the base of your back. It's usually a day case procedure. There can be quite a bit of bruising and it can be sore for a few weeks.

2) This doesn't actually involve getting bone marrow itself, just bone marrow cells - and is often preferred because it is much less painful. It involves having an injection and blood test once a day for a week or so. The injection contains a drug to stimulate the bone marrow to produce cells. Once the bone marrow cells start getting into the blood, you get hooked up to a machine (drip in each arm) which takes blood out, filters out the bone marrow stem cells and returns the rest of the blood. The actual procedure takes about half a day.

Thanks for clearing that up for everyone. =P

I was reading up on bone marrow donation and came across something that said I have to pay a $65-$95 fee for the examination.. is this true? I've been considering donating but not if I have to pay for it

You can find out when they have testing booths. They just prick your finger for a bit of blood, IF you match, thats a big IF, then they will contact you. No cost involved in that. At that point, I do not know of the costs involve, but its rare, very rare, to even get to that stage. At that point, I'm sure the recipient/family would be more than willing to compensate for the exam.
