How is the bitrate? If it is 150MB/s then AMD cannot help you, if it is +300MB/s neither Nvidia can. There is no acceleration for these types of media streaming. It is just the way it is unfortunately. You have no iGPU to accelerate too, only software decoding. HD630 for instance, does 120 MB/s.

The codec is more compressed with bitrates in the 25-50Mbps range which is probably why it is so taxing to decode in realtime. Great for aquisition but tough for editing.

Thanks for your responses. The lack of clear options sort of sucks. I do not want to transcode everything and the system does bog down with 1080p60 material with some filters applied. I will wait until some Edius users can test the new chips to see if there is any benefit but I am not super optimistic. The IGP was kind of my best shot to get better decoding performance but it looks like 4:2:2 material is still not supported. Sigh...
KL seems like it's already a good bit quicker than your Haswell in video and image processing.
IOW, I think if you went to a 7700K you'd notice the speed bump. Given 2 more KL cores, I think the speed bump would be very nice.

Yes, Maybe Coffee Lake will be the best answer. Especially if it can overclock closer to the 5GHz range.

Coffee Lake will be great, but will share the same expensive proposition of higher end systems. You want to conserve yourself, imo. HEDT line ups are really only situational for a home user.
Also, though you might want to preserve your cuts in best condition, hardware selection for such media playback is really restrictive. You need a 10-bit display chain and Dolby HDR. HDR10 doesn't offer 10-bit playback, it is 10-bit or HDR. Only the 12-bit Dolby version does both and only high end home TV's currently profess such a feature. LCD's aren't quick enough for finer gradient tonality. That leaves you with LG OLEDs.
I think it is better if you stick to software encoding with your current setup since you have it going and moving up the scale will only present you with the issues, not their solutions.
PS: you need HDR to display more colours on LCD displays. You cannot distinguish them without bright illumination.

Thanks for your input. I do not quite understand all of your points though. I am fine with editing in a 10 bit environment but previewing in 8 bit if that is what you mean. Most all consumer delivery is in 8 bit so it is wise to use that as a gauge. Sort of like recording audio in 24 bit but delivering on 16 bit CD or MP3.

I don't understand "conserve yourself"? Do you mean do not spend a lot of money? I am fine with spending up to the $1,000 10 core Skylake-X if it is the best tool for the job.

I don't doubt the coolers these days. It is just that my case fans don't expel the heat and it becomes a rotisserie down there. They say it will come with liquid coolers. I bet they are for higher end bouts - they come at 100$ for retail. Very crucial...
Also, there are rumours of delay at launch.
