This is strange. I have a 1 Ghz Tbird (K7S5A, 256 PC-133, 20 Gig HD, ATI Xpert 2000, 16X CD burner, Win 98FE 300 Watt AMD Approved PS). I bought a Volcano HSF to replace my Coolermaster (actually, I got the fan for a second computer I was going to build but decided to put it on my Tbird). In the process of putting it on, the screwdriver slipped and hit the motherboard. When I tried to boot the system, the fans spun, got lights on the computer and CDROM but nothing on the monitor. No HD activity. So I assumed I'd killed the mobo by hitting it with the screwdriver.
I put together the second computer. It's a Duron 800 on a Epox 8KTA+, 128 MB PC-133, 8.4 Gig fujitsu, 32X CD Windows 98FE brand new case with 250 Watt Generic PS). I connected it to the same monitor and ran it for 48 hours. No problems. Today, I came into my office and the monitor was blank. I rebooted the computer. Monitor blank. The fans go on the computer but no power to the CDROM. No HD activity. I hook the computer to another monitor. Same thing. Blank screen. Power on but nothing.
So, of course, now I know I didn't ruin the first computer with the screwdriver. But what gives? The common denominator is that they were both hooked up with the same power cord to the same surge protector. They were also hooked up to the same monitor. Can someone help me out? Are both motherboards dead? They still get power but nothing happens on the screen. Someone suggested I reset the BIOS. Did that. Nothing. I took the HD out of both computers and they work on a third computer. I have another brand new mobo sitting around but I'm afraid to try it out. Anyone seen anything like this?
