Hi,

I just purchased a new Yamaha F1 USB 2.0 external CDRW drive. Everytime I tried to burn a CD using the latest NERO software 5.5.9.9, the software would just hang and the CDR drive would just keep spinning. I've tried everything, I did a clean reinstall of XP, I tested with all 6 USB ports on the motherboard and all have the same behavior.

My system configuration:

P4 1.6A OC'ed to 2.30 (with AGP, PCI locked at 66/33)
512 Meg Corsair XMS 2700 at 360 Mhz (4:5 divider) in DIMM slot2
Gainward Geforce 3 Ti200 128 meg 200/450 OC'ed to 240/500
Windows XP with SP1

with BIOS 2424 it would hang.
with BIOS 2822 with EHCI 2.0 disabled, it would work but at USB 1.1 rate
with BIOS 2822 with EHCI 2.0 enabled, it would hang just like 2424.

My system is extremely stable, I never received any blue screens and I have been playing all the lastest games like WC3, JK 2, etc and have never crashed.

I also tested my Yamaha F1 CDR with my laptop and it works with USB 1.1 but at a reduced burning rate.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I have XP service pack 1 installed and I do have an Icon showing USB 2.0 controller in my device manager. I don't have any question marks on any device. I have a USB mouse and a digital game pad and both work fine but both are USB 1.1 devices. I don't have another USB 2.0 device to test with except my Yamaha F1. Nero software also detected my drive. I can play music, read files fine with the drive, I just can't burn anything. Everytime I tried to burn some files, it would just hang. I tried mutliple kind of CDR media and different burning speed ranging from 1x to 44x and none of them worked. But the instant I disabled the USB 2.0 in the 2822 BIOS of 4G4A+, it started to work again, but in USB 1.1 mode.

Hi,

OMG OMG, I solved my own problems. I went out and bought a cheapy $10 USB 2.0 PCI card for my brand new Yamaha CDRW F1 external USB 2.0 burner and IT WORKS. IT FREAKING WORKS.

EPOX 4G4A+ IS A MAJOR PIECE OF CRAP.

It advertises 6 USB 2.0 ports but none of them work with my CD BURNER and a no name cheap $10 card works. EPOX 4G4A+ 's USB 2.0 compliance is a MAJOR SCAM. IT DOESN'T WORK. Now I have a motherboard with 6 USELESS USB 2.0 ports.

STAY AWAY FROM EPOX motherboards. Too bad I am stuck with it.

I don't have any probs with the USB ports on my epox 4g4a+. but when I had an Abit Bh6 board with a TDK velocd 24x cdrw the burner would stall and you see the lights stay on and it is spinning but the computer would be stuck(crash).
Turns out that it was a prob with the IDE connector.. *shrug*... Not the same as your prob.. but it was nice to share. ^_^

I do

The USB ports work in USB 1.1 mode once you disable the USB 2.0 feature in the 2822 BIOS. One of the MAIN REASONS I bought this motherboard was the lure of 6 USB 2.0 ports not 1.1.

USB 1.1 is slow as hell. Anyways, more and more USB 2.0 devices will become available, we will see more and more people complain about their Epox 4G4A+'s USB 2.0 not working as advertised.

This is distressing... has anyone resolved this delimma? One of the main reasons I picked this board was for USB 2.0.... I don't currently have any USB 2.0 devices, but was hoping my digital camera would work faster on 2.0 (which it doesn't seem to). I've had no USB problems per se, but pan to buy an external USB HD. I would hate to have to buy another PCI card just to use it.

I am a USB nut. The only cables coming out of the back of my computer are: 1 power, 1video, 1 USB, 1 audio = 4 total cables! I have my old HP LaserJet and USR Courier external modem working through an IBM USB port replicator/hub. My keyboard, mouse, joystick and strategic commander are all USB as is my MIDI interface. My digital camera also uses USB. All work fine... just SLOW (USB 1.1).

I don't know if this could be the cause, but I have read that if a USB 1.1 peripheral is plugged into a USB 2 port, anything else plugged into that port will operate under 1.1 transfer rates. I assume this means on any pair or extended plugs running off of any of the USB controllers. I hope this does not mean a 1.1 plugged into the system forces all USB to 1.1, only on that specific controller.

Hmmm that could be. I've never read that (about a USB1.1 connecting in a USB 2.0 slot).... but if it's true it could explain a few things. But if you have 6 ports on this board, meaning 3 root hubs, should it only affect the two ports on that root hub? Simple leave one root hub free for USB 2.0 devices? Anyone? Personally "backwards" compatible to me means that 1.1 should be transparent to 2.0 and not interfere with it.

Also, on Epox's web site (no direct link due to the active session crap), there are new drivers for USB 2.0.... maybe they could help with Faux's problems?

Been happy with my 4g4a+ so far.... I'll post here when I finally buy a USB 2.0 device...
