Hi, I just purchased an ATI Radeon 32MB DDR card and took out my Diamond Viper TNT2 Ultra Viper 32 card. Everthing was working fine until i tryed to install the drivers for the ATI Radeon. It installed the drivers, wanted to reboot of course. Now it gets to the windows 98 desktop but it gets a couple of lines across it and locks up like Fort Knox. I rebooted several times after adjusting some stuff in the cmos. It does the same thing. A couple of times it did draw a few more desktop icons before it locked up but it still locks up. If i could get to the control panel and set the colors and reso I may could fix it,but i never can get there. I have an ATI Pro 64MB card that i bought real cheap about 6 months ago and thought it would run better than my Viper. LOL WRONG. That card gave me problems just like this 1 has. I went back to my Viper after that 1st try w\ the ATI card and it worked like a dream. I know alot of you fellas have ATI cards, but my personal experience with them they are not worth a rat's ass. Can anyone give me suggestions of how to fix the problem w\ the ATI card? Otherwise Im going to send that 1 back and order me another Nvidia based TNT 32MB card. I dont have my Viper now...I sold it. Thx.:disgust:

I have a radeon LE running under Windows 98 and linux redhat 7.1(with acceleration enabled!) and all is fine! The "ATI Multimidia Center" runs ok!

Well, in my case, I installed all from the beginning...

Sound like a problem of Nvidia driver clash with ATI.
I had the exact situation except that the Viper is not a ultra. The thing ran flawlessly until I delibrately play around with it.

Did you uninstall the TNT2 driver first and make it set to Standard display than install the Radeon LE driver?

Reformat should be a guarantee success.

Don't throw away the LE yet, believe me you will see wonders from Viper to LE.

Go into safe mode (hit F8 while booting up, then choose to boot into safe mode). Install the "Standard Display Adpater(VGA)" driver (in the device manager, when installing a new driver for your graphics card, choose the "Display a list of all drivers..." option, then hit the button marked "Show all hardware", scroll up to "(standard display types)" - the driver is in there) and reboot. This will get your video card running on the standard display driver that any graphics card can use (though it only supports 640x480 and 256 colours).

After rebooting, search for old nvidia system files and delete them. After you've done that, search for and delete all the "ATI*.inf" files in the c:\windows\inf folder; there should be about a dozen files. Re-install the Radeon driver and it should work properly.

In that link I gave to GF FAQ .com. There are links to programs on how to remove all the Nvidia junk. I've used em, and they work.

DClark is certainly on the right track, but if you're really anal about getting out all the junk from any/all previous video drivers. Check out this great guide I use whenever I change Radeon drivers.

Do the Nvidia remove program first though.

amb#cog, that is a great guide for ATI driver installation. As pointed out by Taz4158, it does forget to delete two important files, drvdata.bin and drvidx.bin. These will be found in the C:\windows\inf or C:\windows\inf\other directories. Find and delete these as well before continuing the installation. From what I gather these have something to do with how the display card identifies the monitor. They should be deleted whenever the display card and/or monitor is changed. Good luck Hyp and post back to let us help.
