Hey..I was told to come here for advise or what type of laptops are good. My old compac home PC crashed and I now want a laptop due to travel, etc.

All I know is I have heard DELLS are bad..ACER's & HP's are good.

Where to buy? Is ebay safe?

What do you want to do with the notebook? Are you playing games on it?
Just work? What type of work? What programs are you going to run on it?
Do you need wireless?

I am a 40 year old graphic artist. I use my work PC for that.
This is my personal PC for website...e-mail...etc.
I also store lots of PIC's and travel.

So all you are doing is surfing the web, checking e-mail and storing pictures from you digital camera. Find the cheapests Laptop you can and you will be set.

Now if you want to burn DVD's the cheapest will not do it. You could always get an external burner and do that. Search the hot deals forum for laptops.

Here is one.

Ya..your going to come accross people bad moutning Dells. I have a 9300 and love it and my son has a 600 and its great. But...there are other decent laptops..IBM make a rugged dependable laptop, ACER and ASUS have some interesting offerings. For a moment a thought on the forum bad mouthing of Dell...it's hard to be the industry leader in sales for 6 straight years if all you sell is junk..just a thought. There aren't enough stupid people to go around to allow that to happen if you don't have something to offer in your products.

I am very happy with dell. I have the 8600 in my sig and my fiancee has a 600m and we are both very happy. My CPU fan went out about 8months after i got it but Dell next day aired me a box i sent it in and had it back within 4 days (plus they gave me new rubber feet for the bottom The only other problem we have had is the battery's are showing considerable age after only about 13-14 months. But over all I am very happy with product and Dells service. So make sure you get quite a few opinions rather than those who simply enjoy bad mouthing dell for no apparent reason.

you need to establish a pricepoint. that would help narrow down choices

Dells come preloaded with so much crap that they barely work, they don't come with install discs, or a copyy of the operating system you purchased, and tech support comes from India. Unfortunately other big computer companies do the same. They do however offer some really good sales now and then, unfortunately nothing great lately. I think their build quality is just as good as most of their competition.

I would get an IBM Thinkpad R50e , those things are cheap $ 779.99 brand new, very sturdy, awesome Tech support and warranty deals.

I got mine for programming, web surfing and music editing.
I love my R50e , they have taken all the unnecesarry crap out of it and gave people who are looking for an affordable Thinkpad exactly what they need.

There is nothing bad that I can really say about it, all my friends that were looking for a decent latpop and took a look at my R50e either ended up with one or something a tad more expensive i.e a T series.
You can never regret buying a Thinkpad.

I have had mine for 4 months now, and I am just getting more attached to it everyday, I was going to upgrade to a T series and sell it but I just couldn't part away from it and now I want to keep it at least till I graduate (which is about 2.5 years from now).

I saw your Tux avatar, and let me say that I am running Linux on mine (Fedora Core 4 to be more specefic) and you need to know that everything just works !!
WiFi , Graphics card, Sound, NIC, extra buttons, even the on screen display.

Do a search here on SFF , notebooks for "R50e" you will see my thread through which I have made a mini-review about it, and you will see threads for other members that took my word for it and ordered one and are now very happy with their decesion.
