Hey all,

Was running an MSI Platinum NForce4Ultra with Bios Rev 1.1. Got a sweet OC out of my 90nm winnie up to 2.65GHz(265x10)

Recently I ran into some serious USB issues and was recommended to update to newest BIOS rev 1.5. My USB issues dissapeared, but now I have a serious dillema. My Comp won't post over 235 FSB???!!! So I have dropped 300MHz by updating to a more "stable" bios.

I may sacrifice my monitors built in Media Drive(was causing the issue) and shoot back to the older BIOS, I assume I can simply make a boot disk with those bios on it and dump the new ones?

Thanks

Any idea why this would happen? Seems from what I ahve read most people tend to get better OC out of a bios update, saw some go from 219 up to 255 with this update, but mine is the reverse. Weird.

You answered your own question in your first post. About the second one, I dunno.

All of you settings go back to default when you update the bios. Did you remember to set the HTT multiplier back down to 3x?

Its not 'unusual' to see OC's fail after a bios update. Did you update the bios with the cpu overclocked ? Ya may want to re-do the flash with the CPU at standard speed.

1.4 and 1.5 BIOS are terrible for OCing. Use 1.6 or 1.71/3. PM for a link.

I flashed back to 1.1 for now, back to 2650MHz on my 3200, so I am happy and my USB is all working again.

Are the 1.6 and .17s all betas???

here is a NON ocing question....but you guys would know better than any other...I run a nforce 3 neo2 plat. with an FX53 proc....what should my HT multiplier be set to? its at 5x now, and that is default...what will making it 4x or 3x do?

In your case, almost nothing. It'll slightly(you won't notice it) slow your system down because you're not ocing and are dropping the htt speed. Basically, there's no point in lowering the HTT multi if you don't plan to overclock.

Yeah HTT is your FSBx some number, ie 2,3,4,5. Normally it runs at 1000MHz(2000 DDR), so witht he FX your FSB must be at 200 if its at 5X. Generally you can go out of spec up to 1100MHz withoutt o many issues, but it doesnt speed up your system all that much, in fact dropping the HTT down to 3x hasnt slowed mine down much either all my benchies stay about he same, except for memory which went down somewhat.

what is it a multiplier of?? I'm used to the system where the FSB determines the clock speed through the chips multiplier.....should it be faster at a higher multiplier?

Its the multplier for hypertransport, this is the communications network that connects averything on an AMD motherboard. Ie, AGP/PCI/PCIE/Memory, and it runs at 1000MHz

You might want to verify that the AGP/PCI lock is still working when o/cing with the newer BIOS. On my Asus K8N, a new BIOS disabled the lock (had to now set it to 67 from 66 default to re-enable - which was not required on the original BIOS). You can use clockgen or the nvidia system utility to confirm it's locked.
