Please don't ask details about how I've ended up to where I'm at now. I've got no time to explain.

I did a Win98se install from a genuine MS CD-ROM onto a system that had been upgraded from Win95 to Win98 with an upgrade disk. Instead of installing into the existing C:\Windows folder, I chose the given directory of C:\Windows.000 to copy my files into during the installation.

Now that I've completed the install, I've discovered that my links in my start menu are missing. No problem, I'll just copy the shortcuts over from my original C:\windows\start menu directory. Anyway, although the links are there, anytime that I select a program to open up, I'm told that there are missing DLLs and other files. Some programs ask me to reinstall the program. I really don't want to go through all that.

I'm wondering if I do a second Win98se reinstall, and select the C:\windows directory to install into. Would that fix my problems?

You will need to reinstall the app/s that call up the missing dlls. It could be that those apps uses a different version of the dlls & was over writen by the install.

Are you entirely sure about that? I see that you're a diamond member, and I'm sure that you've seen it all, but I had gotten a reply from another forum that by reinstalling into the c:\windows directory will fix my problems. Right now, I'm seeing missing DLLs for every application. But not all apps share their DLL with the OS, right? Would it be safe to assume that I can successfully reinstall Win98se into the c:\windows directory where the previous version of Win98 was, and get most apps back up and working. How about the information for all programs that are in the Control Panels Add/Remove Programs applet? Will reinstalling Win98se into that directory overwrite the information for all software that's currently removable through the applet?

maybe the missing dlls just are not in the search path.... they are usually stored either in the same folder as the app. or in a couple folders in the windows folder... see if you can fix a program by copied the missing dlls from the old windows folder to the same place in the new one... if that works try coppeing the rest of them over... if that didn't work, There are probable a bunch of missing entries in the registry...

Thats my guess

That's what I think it is, is the registry. I wish that I had the forsight to backup the registry so that I'd have had an easy time importing all that.

If it installed to Windows.000 then it is a seperate install, not an upgrade. Did you boot from the cdrom or run it through windows?

Another possibility is that your programs may have added DLL's into the Windows system folder (or subfolders) , and these are obviously not going to be found in your new Windows000 folder (or subfolders). You might try searching for these missing DLLs to see if they do in fact exist under Windows somewhere and copy them over into the same location under your Windows000 folder.

Good Luck!
