i installed a new dvd burner, and now windows freezes when you press enter on the 'start windows normally' etc screen when you press enter. safe mode doesn't help, it just loads some files then freezes. unplugging the burner doesn't help either...

no, they arent. and anyway, it still doesnt work when i unplug them. the only thing i can think of is maybe i staticed my hard drive? (but i earthed myself, and it still detects it); besides, i never really touched the hard drive...

edit: also, it won't boot from cd. it stalls on 'starting windows'

go to hard drive manufacturer's website and download drive diiagnostics utility.

It'll tell you if the drive is healthy or not.

anyway, i think it might be a motheboard problem (though the hd is dead too)

i am going to get a new motherboard (asus k8n-e deluxe), psu (tagan 480w) and hdd (seagate 200gb). that should work, right (in other words, my ram, cpu and graphics card should still work, right?)

Have you tried pulling everything apart and putting just the minimum amount of stuff back together?

I just completed a problem like this about two weeks ago. It was a very painful experience. The only time I was really able to boot from a CD (XP Cd was freezing at "Starting Windows" point) is when I removed one of the rams and disconnected all peripherals (internal and external) with the exception of the system HDD, CD Rom and of Video card. Initially I thought it was a PSU problem so I went back to basic using only bare peripherals. But it was still no go. Then I went on to remove one of the rams and then switched them around until I was able to go past the "Starting Windows" point of the XP CD. Disconnect all external connections like printers, other USB's, etc. Try again and maybe you will hit it to boot. Technically, the problem right now is a corrupt MBR or FAT table. After booting from the XP CD just do a repair installation and you should be back where you started except for the updates. Goodluck.
