1)
ok now at the moment in this office i have 2 8 port 10/100 hubs they are uplinked but not at full capacity, i ran some cable downstairs to add 2 users to the network cat5e cable and wall outlets . patched them in and nothing they couldnt get a ip address or do anything but all the lights on the hub were on and the cards looked like they were getting traffic.

the cables are at the most 30 - 40 foot long so i dont think its a length issue, so i ran more cable to see if it was a wiring problem still no go.

so i found an old 3com superstack 10 mb hub and uplinked it to the original hub with a crossover cable and the bloody machines downstairs worked?????

so do u think its a power problem ? ie the original hubs lacking in power to relay the signal to hub no2 and then to the server ??? so by adding a 240volt superstack hub it had enough power because the 10/100 hub is a 9volt jobby.

Or am i barking up the wrong tree?and have maybe missed something. (i tryed changing the cards to full and half duplex as well)

so what could have gone wrong?

2)

ok so i am thinking to add more users in the future and am thinking about putting in a stackable 10/100 24 port switch with a patch panel etc will i still run into the same problem ? I will remove all the other hubs in the circuit and relay all new cabling. But i dont want to do this if i am still going to have the problem...

please suggest all you think i should now or look at or think aboutr getting.....

your help is apprieciated

nd thanks in advance

If the hub has a uplink port you use a straight through cable , if no uplink port use a crossover cable. This may be the problem.

Did you check IP settings? Subnets? (Try static IPs) If you don't have a DHCP server you have to go static. Can users on the two seperate hubs see each other? Can you give more information on your settings?

How long are your other cable runs? I have had this problem and solution, when I miswired my cat5 connectors. Miswired cables, over 30 feet, will work if forced to 10Mbit connection, but won't work on a 100Mbit connection.

By miswired, I mean just wiring all the twisted pairs straight across without the split pair in the center.

TTN1 please eloborate i dont understand what u mean???

theXing - i am using a dhcp server for all except my machine i have a static address

Bleep - yes it has an uplink port so using a straight through cable...

my machine used to work now though its having trouble it logs into the server but then if i try to get to a network drive it says "no logon servers available to authorise your request or summat like that" also we use outlook connected to a ms post offce and i could have it open and it would loose connection to the post office ...

i am leaning towards the hub dying

what do you think?

If your terminating your own cables, what does your wire layout look like. It should be color coded like thiis when looking at each connector from the side without the tab.

White/Orange, Orange, White/Green, Blue, White/Blue, Green, White/Brown, Brown

Or the reverse of the above. Notice how the green and white/green are split by the blue pair. If the cable isn't wired with thie split pair, it won't work at 100Mbit beyond about 30 feet. If you connect the miswired cable to a 10Mbit hub that forces it to 10Mbit it will work at longer lengths. If this is the case, you can solve you problem by properly wiring the plugs on the cable.
