Help with buying a new digital Camera?

I have had my Canon A70 for about 2 years now.
I was thinking about possibly upgrading to something a little better before I go on vacation in a couple weeks.

Would upgrading to something, for example, the Canon A95 be worthwhile?

I would HOPE to get something that uses Compact flash, as I have already invested in about 768 MB of CF cards, though if a camera was worthy enough I could make the switch to another medium.

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions on digital cameras? What cameras do you guys use? I am not looking to spend over 300, or at least not a WHOLE lot over it...

I do prefer Canon digital cameras, but have not had any experience with other brands.

What specs are you looking for...?

I would suggest the HP Photosmart M417... less than $270 with a 1gb sD card included..

Its a 5.2 mp
21x zoom (3opt, 7dig)
Movie with sound

I just bought it for my dad... its going to his first dig. camera, and he likes the HP brand.. I think for the normal family its s good pick.... the only complaint I have, is that it doesnt have a viewfinder...I dont even use it in my camera, but I think it is something useful to have when bat is low....

Look for other options at pricegrabber.com...

I can get the CAnon Powershot s2 IS for $563.99 at Dell Home. This includes two Sandisk 1 GB SD cards and shipped 2 business day.

How does that sound? Or is this camera even worth it?

What happened to "I am not looking to spend over 300"?

It looks like a sweet camera.

I'm surprised I'm still managed to be happy with my Canon A40 for so long (3 years).

well the price thing didn't REALLY matter

I have the money, but I am still debating on whether I want to spend tha tmuch.

I may just end up keeping my A70 for a little while longer.I might even have to if I wait too much longer

I've got a Canon A95. Takes amazing pics.

Only thing I don't like is the delay between when I push the button and when it actually takes the shot.

If there's a digital camera as good with no delay for less than $300, I'd get it.

I'm thinking the Canon Digital SLR 350XT is the one to buy... BUT I'm having a problem getting the $835 + $60 for 1gb compact flash card out of my pocket.

A95 is a great camera. I use it to take pics for the website in my sig and it does well.
The previous poster was wrong, CF is used a lot.
NewEgg had a deal with my A95 that had a free 256MB Kingston Hi-Speed card w/it for free; got it for just under $300 shipped 2nd day. Otherwise keep an eye on Dell coupons & such.

The S2 looks to be a good camera, just depends how much u want to spend.

what does everyone think of the Canon Powershot S2 IS?

I bought the S1 IS for my son and its an excellent camera. The S2 wasn't avilable yet, but I'd get one in a heartbeat if I was in the hunt for a new camera. The IS works great with the zoom, and the video capabilities are likely the best you can get with a digital camera.

For me, I like small cameras. Just picked up two Canon SD400 cameras for me and my wife.

I also like that new, small Nikon that's about 1/2 inch thick and has a 2.5 inch LCD.

And, yea compact flash is still used, to some extent, but it's on it's way out. I sold my CF cards along with my Canon S500 camera.

SD cards seem to be becoming the standard for cameras and are also used in new Palm PDAs. Their small size is a crucial factor. And have you seen that Sandisk SD 1GB card that has it's own USB connector? UNREAL

You really need two SD cards with 1GB each? I have one 1 GB card, and it's good to have the storage, but even with shooting a lot of videos, it's overkill.

That depends on the camera and what you use it for. 1 GB is only ~ 9 minutes of video at the highest quality settings with the S1/S2 canons. You wouldn't be getting one of those if you didn't intend to use it for video, so I would say 1 GB minimum in that case, and 2 isn't a bad idea if you can afford them.

For just Pics, I use a couple 256 MB since they are cheap. I also have a battery powered portable 20GB drive for storage on longer trips when I have no PC access, which I prefer over buying a bunch of flash media.

Don't forget a couple sets of rechageable batteries and a fast recharger.
