help with choosing OS

Ok, I plan to get a new computer soon, and it will mostly be used for:

Internet
Brand New Games
Old Games

The main question here is does Win 2000 Pro run all games ok? Or do I need ME?

Well Win2K definitely does not run games well. And Windows ME? I can safely say that ME sucks as*. I know from personal experience that Windows ME is definitely not worth installing. You can look at a whole bunch of threads of anandtechies telling you how bad Windows ME really performs. I think the safest way to go, is Windows 98SE, or dual booting Win2K and Windows 98. I'm running Windows 98 at the moment, but nothing beats the stability of Win2K.

I dunno what games your talking about but w2k runs most games quite well. What type of older games are you talking about.

Computer chess programs, and just your average PC games. I think that WIn 98 is not an option so it looks like I will go with 2000 and hope for the best with games...to be honest the first reply was the first I had heard about 2k not running games, hopefully it is just a few in particualr. Anyway XP is coming in a few months I will just upgrade to that if need be.

Win2K has supported every game I've tried except Chessmaster 5000... Others ya just need patches or stuff to make them wrk..

Win2k will run most of the games well, but some old games might need patches from Game developer to work properly under 2K.

Win98/ME will be your best bet, as they will run old games fine.

If possible, get dual-boot setup on your system. Run everything off 2K, only install games that don't work on 2k on Win98/ME. That way, you enjoy the stability of 2k and as well ensure you can play all your games.
