here's the problem

-if i have my computer connected to the modem i can get out to the internet fine

if i have the computer connected to the router then the router to the modem i still get the 192 IP im supposed to get but when i go into the router config its IP is 0.0.0.0 (hence no internet connection)

i try doing the DHCP release and renew and it still comes up 0.0.0.0

BUT the router is fine, i brought it over to a friends house, connected it to his modem and it worked with in a few seconds

the things that have changed recently are the modem- we had a power surge and comcast came out and gave us a different modem (thats when the problems started)

i called comcast and each time i say i think it might be the modem at fault they snap back tell me it is working perfectly fine

and idea's?

(i also did a search on this and found 1 thread which wasn't much help)

OS: windows XP pro
router: linksys (non-wireless)

What kind of router do you have?
Try cloning the mac address of the working computer when you connect directly into the modem, power cycle modem\router for 10 minutes. Boot up modem let it run for about 5 minutes, then plug in your router, and check for a WAN IP address.

If your computer works OK with the Modem and Not with the Router.

Your Router is "Kaput".

or the Router does not project the computer's MAC (which is explained toward te end of the page linked above).

I too had that problem and resolved it with the following:

Connect the modem to your PC and from a command line, type ipconfig /all
Note the ip address, gateway, and DNS servers.
Manually enter that in your router as a static IP address.

Try to go online but it probably won't work. Switch the router back to DHCP.

The linksys that I had seemed to retain the gateway and DNS info thus making it easier to receive a response to the DHCP request.

I know, it sounds hokey, but it worked for me.

I had the same problem when I first connected my modem to the router. I did what Uncle Flappy did. Run>ipconfig/all and write down DNS and gateway info and then right click on the internet connection and select properties and input that info in the respective tabs - you should be able to able very straightforward and also go to your router configuration page and do the same. Restart your computer and your internet should work now.

i had a serge too and it killed my modem and router because comcast was too stupid to ground the cable line coming into the house as regulations require. Could have killed me.

Unplug modem, then plug modem back in. If the modem does not grab an IP address and give it to your router, then call comcast and tell them I said fix it. AND go outside and look at your cable and see if you see any ground line on it like you will on your phone line. If not, tell them to fix that too, ASAP.
