Hi, basically my cpu fan appears to be die-ing - it struggles to reach the proper speed at boot up, and makes strange noises, and sometimes doesnt come on.

Can someone recommend a new one for me to get. I dont understand what I need to buy; 120mm? 80mm? Can I get them seperate or can i only buy them attached to a cpu heatsink. I would be happy to replace the heatsink and cpu as a combination, but I have a strong feeling the heatsink will be stuck to the cpu, which I don't want to replace.

I have an Asus A8N-E and AMD X2 2200+ cpu with heatsink/fan that came in the box. Could someone link me to exactly what I need to buy to address the above question please, preferably to a UK site, e.g. overclockers, dabs, etc...

Thank You!

Here ya go!
If you let your machine run for a little while first, it'll be easier to get the heatsink off the cpu. Twist it slightly while pulling gently.

Is it generally not possible then to purchase a CPU fan without the heatsink? I'm a bit worried about ruining the CPU if I try and pry the heatsink off. Is it worth upgrading my CPU do you think for the motherboard/CPU I have at the moment?

I don't think you'll have problems taking the heatsink off if you do as I suggested...getting it up to system temperature, then after shutting down your machine, take the HSF off, and twist the heatsink while pulling slightly.

What type of things do you do w/your PC? You a gamer or do you just piddle around on the internet? If your PC is just a "general-use" machine, than I wouldn't bother upgrading it.
One can purchase a CPU fan w/o a heatsink, but one must have a type of heatsink that has a user-replaceable fan.

I think you'll be happy with it. Don't forget to purchase some good TIM like this.
Make sure you clean the base of the heatsink as well as the cpu w/some 91% isopropyl alcohol (if you have it available where you're at. The higher the %, the less water).
Apply the TIM using the guide found here.
Good luck!

Hey, thanks for that. I just encountered one small problem which had forced me to put the old heatsink unit back on.

I bought the heatsink you recommended, but it has 4 'feet' (as an example see http://www.frozencpu.com/produ...GP.html?tl=g48c369s48) which don't appear to have anywhere to go on my motherboard heatsink mounting piece of plastic thing. It therefore doesn't fit. Am I not doing something really stupid?

I've never used that particular one before, but you should be able to remove those feet if its a multi platform HSF

Wouldn't it be quite loose without the feet though? They are definitely removable as part of the heatsink construction process out of the box was screwing those feet on both sides

Those feet are for LGA 755 motherboards... I'm pretty sure the AMD stuff uses different mountings.
