So the apartment I'll be living in has this REALLY STEEP arse hill (which is the driveway)... You have to go really slow approaching it otherwise you'll scratch up your ride. So my problem is HOW do you go up this hill without it stalling on you when you can't gain any speed or momentum at the bottom of the hill?

last time I tried, I get to about 80% of the hill, then start to stall. This drive way is seriously steep. No joke.

I'm currently avoiding this drive way but I'd like to be able to conquer it sooner or later =)

If you're a newbie, just ride the hell out of your clutch. Does some serious wear but it'd be better than scratching up your car.

So you're fully in gear and it's stalling? I'm not sure what to tell you other than drive faster If it's that steep of a hill, your clutch probably won't appreciate you feathering it the whole way.

practice makes perfect.

dont be scared. you will get it. just practice to get the right amount of gas/clutch.

Yeah after I get past the beginning part of the hill, I get into 1st gear and have the clutch fully disengaged so its all gas. When I get to about 80% of the hill, it starts to sputter and feels like it's going to stall and then it goes out.

So ride the damn clutch. Jeez, it's not rocket science.

more gas earlier is what you need. Rev the engine more before you let out the clutch.

Use the E-Brake.. (pull it up) and use it and add gas. =]

or just use the hell out of the clutch and gas.

so you're moving at the bottom of the hill, you get part of the way up, and THEN you shift into first?
try just stopping at the bottom and starting from first. Shifting while you're on a hill loses a LOT of momentum...

btw roughly how steep would you say this incline is?

When in doubt, give it more gas. Practice makes perfect. Until you get it down, you'll wear the hell out of your clutch, but that's the only way to do it, I'm afraid.

Are you saying that if you start from the bottom of the hill in 1st, with it floored, you get 80% of the way up the hill.. start slowing down, and it dies?

WTF? Does it say Briggs and Stratton under the hood?

sounds like a really steep hill, what car do you drive? it could be that it just isnt going to have enough power.....wel with the clutch fully engaged it seems like it doesnt already (there is a test like this they do at Mira test center..... how far can the car go up a steep as hill before spluttering to a halt and its a proper bad incline sometng that in real life on normal roads youd never come across, most of the cars (mostly 4 pots) never make it to the top)

basically, your gonna have to keep the revs high and ride the clutch..... its not gonna be good for the clutch though. you need to keep the car in its torque band.

failing that, you could figure out how fast you can travel before you hit the hill ? i mean any momentum you can carry onto the hill will help you get up it. perhaps devise a way to basically lessen the change in gradient at the bottom of the hill from the road? like lay some wooden planks or a steel plate between the foot of the hill and the road at the bottom?.... this will lessen the gradient change, should let you attack the hill faster without mullering your cars front bumper

last option. buy a winch, attach to something solid at top, winch your car up my thermo lecturer drives a old skool landy defender with a 4T winch on the front, it can pull itself out of anything

so at that point, press the clutch pedal in someway and apply more gas to keep the engine in the torque/power band.... ride the clutch yes, but theyre not that delicate so dont worry about ruining it too much. if you have to do this often though you will be heading for a replacement sooner rahter than later

Approach in second, disengage the clutch and brake as you hit the point where the angle jacks up (to prevent the car bottoming out), then as the car clears the angle, engage first smoothly and pull up the incline.

Easy

It's easy for you, me and Otis, but remember our trans-Atlantic friends drive smoosh-waft-o-matico-flyte transmissions most of the time.

pics of said hill? I have a hard time believing that the car would stall out on all gas.

Actually, that's the kind of place I find to teach someone how to drive a standard. There's a parking lot near me with a long driveway that they have to shift on halfway up, then at the top, after stopping, they have to keep from rolling backwards to make a turn out of the driveway.

Anyways, moving your thread to the garage forum; hope you don't mind.
