Help with GA-7vrxp

I'm having some trouble with my new motherboard... I'm pretty experienced with computers, having put 3 of them together in the recent past... but for some reason I can't get this one to even post. As of now I've got only my CPU (1.2 ghz tbird)with HSF, video card (radeon ddr le), ram (PC2100) and hard drive plugged in. Obviously the ATX power cable is plugged into the mobo, as are all of the fans. I know I'm probably forgetting to do something really stupid but I just can't think of what it is. Thanks in advance for all help.

Did you make sure that the power button cable is properly plugged into the mobo? Is the power supply switch turned on on the back of the PSU? What happens when you press the power button? Have you checked to make sure the mobo is properly mounted on the brass standoffs?

I'm almost positive that the motherboard is mounted properly, and the PSU is going on. When I try to turn the computer on, I can see the fans (CPU and case) working and when I try plugging my HD in I hear the disk spinning but the monitor stays on standby. The video card is plugged in properly and is connected to the monitor. Grr, this is making me angry.

Actually all of a sudden I don't feel too sure that my MB is mounted exactly right, but from what I see the only places anything comes into contact with the main board is where the screws go through the mounting holes into my case. I'm running a Lian-Li 68 with plastic mounting brackets if that helps at all.

Are you getting any beeps? Try reseating the video card. Is the video card AGP or PCI?

The last thing I would try is building the computer not in the case by placing the mobo on a table or something and see if it boots that way. If it does not boot, I would say your mobo is dead.

Sigh... still not posting... it's so frustrating to get a dead motherboard, especially considering it was a completely new retail board... guess I'll have to RMA it. Thanks for all the help minendo.

Is it possible that a bad motherboard could cause a working processor to get messed up (ie never work again)? Also is it possible or likely that running an athlon xp cpu on an AMD761 chipset without the HSF on (for just a few seconds) could hurt either the CPU or motherboard? Thanks.

Recheck the jumpers, especially the multiplier ones.

the MB has only a few jumpers... I've tried the multiplier jumpers at both auto and at 9x (on 133 FSB setting).

It's near impossible for a bad board to damage a CPU, unless it somehow overvolts the CPU for too long. Sounds to me like a case of DOA. This, my friends, is why I only buy from places with 30 day exchange policies. (Versus 'ship it to the manufacturer and wait, since it's DOA.')
