I can't access my ftp server on iis (w2k advanced server). It only works on lan it seems. When I use the internal ip or the serverName, it lets me in. But when I use the external ip or the domain name (through dyndns), it won't let me in. It acts the same on both using anonymous or with user/pass. I also have http setup using dyndns and no problem running a site. I think I'm missing something in my ftp setup. Any ideas??

if you attempt to FTP into it from the outside, does it bring up a password prompt or does it simply time out ?

It says error 426 connection closed. It seems like the server's not letting me in.

edit: Yes I put in a user/pass first.

I'm behind a 4-port linksys router but I shouldn't have to port forward 21 since the server is on the DMZ. Plus http is working without port forwarding.

No, I use ftp all the time. And does my isp really have something to do with the ports in my computer?

I'm assuming you are talking about using ftp outbound all the time, and yes your isp can surely block access to ports on your computer from the internet. Many isps now block port 80 going in, and some block 21 cause they don't want servers being run. What I would try is setting up your ftp on another port, 2121 or something, to see if you can get it to work or see if it an actual config problem on your end. If that works you could just ask your isp if they block port 21 outbound.

Daniel: Thanks for the replies.

I just changed the port but I'm still getting the same error

426 Connection closed; transfer aborted.

I'm about ready to give-up using IIS and just use Bulletproof which I've used before and don't remember it being this hard to setup. Any other ideas?

TIA

I'd say just forget IIS, since it has so many security issues, and requires frequent patches.

Yes, he was talking about blocking INBOUND ftp connections, alot of ISP's do that (unforunately). Also, I don't think changing servers is going to make a difference, since this is working on your local lan (e.g. the server is working). Sounds like a misconfiguration in your linksys or being blocked by the isp.

IIS is FTP for dummies easy to do, hard to screw up (wait a minute, it is microsoft).... I think you need to check your settings through the control panel, check log in method, it has been a while, and I can install it if you need help with it. Let me know.

That's alright, I just went ahead and uninstalled IIS. I googled error 426 and apparently a few people are experiencing the same problem with no resolution. I just wanted to see how IIS works anyway, since I never tried using it before.

I'm now running Apache and Bulletproof without any problems.

Thanks for the replies...
