formatted computer. Can't sync without it wanting to erase my old and replace with the default empty library. I don't understand how i switch libraries?
i have tons of books and music on my ipad, not sure how to get it to sync like it used to.

If you have bought everything from the Apple store it will automatically load when you sync and add your account to iTunes. If you got the material from elsewhere you are a dirty pirate that deserves to have that taken from them!

In all seriousness, this is by design. The only way around it is get a program that can pull the media off the iPad into your iTunes library before you sync.

I personally have a copy of Senuti I have bought just to help family members who struggle with this concept. I am sure someone will jump in the thread soon and recommend an equivalent Windows app....

Did you keep your data before the reformat? All you need is the library from your old iTunes installation. You point to that library inside iTunes, and it should work fine.

i don't follow. I already have all my stuff on my PC. I didn't buy anything from Apple nor did i pirate anything either.

anyways its saying i'm on a different library now than before. i think that's the part i need explained first.
naturally i could just erase and add those book and music folders to import, but that takes time.

i dunno where its at if i did. All the files on my Ipad are on my PC, i just don't want to erase my Ipad and reimport all those files....all i want to do is just update new files i put in my folders. but Itunes doesn't show anything, not even whats currently on my Ipad

Because by design, whatever you didn't get from iTunes won't carry over.

Now you can either get one of the programs Macroplant offers, which will help you carry over not just music but movies, books, and everything else (including game saves), or you can choose to restore your music library from elsewhere.

Either way, you have to get files back into your iTunes library before you can put them on the iPad. Common sense is to backup iTunes before reformat, but I'm supposing this is your first time.

Here's a link to Macroplant:

that was better explained. thanks.
don't really want to pay$20 for the macroplant so guess i'll just start all over.

I thought itunes would read whats on my ipad and take it from there. i figured backup was in case something happened to the data on the ipad. Thats why i didnt pay attention to backups for it.

Well, trust me, it's easy to gloss that over. Apple usually doesn't run into the "reformat" concept on their Mac computers, so they really didn't take into account the fact that a PC user running their software might be trying to do everything all over again from scratch.

Actually, Apple assumes a lot of stuffs that only apply to their Mac ecosystem, so you'll at times feel that a software of theirs should be doing something else. It's just by design. iTunes in particular will feel a lot like that, so... if you'll continue using it on a PC, just imagine that it's 1998 and you have to do everything manually.

Your iTunes library is originally stored in:

c:\Users\Your_Username_Here\My Music\iTunes\

I moved mine to a better location though... makes it easier.

Yeah, there is a way to move your library to another location and still have everything sync. I went through something similar (new system, restored iTunes library from a backup), and had no trouble syncing my iPod.

I can't remember exactly what I did now, although if you don't have a backup of your old library, you might be out of luck
