I went through the installation of Mandraka Linux 10 but when it boots up it always hangs during the initialization of partmon, the partition manager. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Do you have any memory cards/devices plugged into your PCMCIA or USB ports? If so, remove them. Actually, take out everything from your USB and PCMCIA ports and reboot. Any change?

That isn't the same problem at all -- LILO is the Linux Loader and it isn't even getting to booting up the kernel. How old is the computer? Recent model? Give us some details on your hardware, where you have linux installed, and what else you have installed (how many drives/partitions).

Can you boot into single mode at all ?
Have you tried booting without all that power management crap on ?

I'm running on a Dell XPS R350 I believe. 256MB Ram 350Mhz Pentium II, 4GB HD (Mandrake formatted), and NIC, intergrated video

I am not sure what is going on with the lilo thing.

So your saying that it boots up, but it takes a hour?

Or isn't it booting up at all?

Usually with lilo when it fails it will go:
l
or
li
or
lil

Or pop out a bunch of numbers like 9999999999.

That stuff indicates at what part of the boot up proccess gets fouled up and then it makes it a bit easier to find out what is going wrong.

But something that just poops out lilo plus the lilo version number? I don't know.

Hell, I didn't even know that Mandrake still used Lilo, I figured they would of switched to grub in any new version. (which you should be using, always the newest version. You can trim the fat to make it faster rather then install a obsolete versions...)

If it's a fresh install I'd just reinstall. If it happens more then a couple reinstalls then I'd either try a different distro or hit up the mandrakeuser.org forums. Developers of Distros care a lot about isntall issues usually and they would know more about the specifics... If this is a actual bug instead of just realy bad luck then it's very likely that somebody else has had the same issue and had it resolved, so searching the mandrakeuser forums may help,

lilo boot errors

Try disabling all power management features in your BIOS. That helps sometimes. Be sure to select "non plug-n-play OS" if you have that option.

I've done all the aforementioned suggestions and it still takes like an hour to even seem "Manrake" on screen...its has been on for 2hours and like 1/2" of a progress bar moved... Reinstallation and bios tweaking were unsuccessful. Any other ideas?

Oh! And it does take a while to enter the BIOS Screen...I think it takes a while to detect the hardrive...could that be linked?
