Help with MOBO issue...

Folks,
My motherboard has started to give my trouble after I tinkered with the heatsink on the CPU. At first, the machine would simply not show the initial screen. It would simply give a long beep then a pause followed by a long beep...
I removed one of my memory stick and cleared the CMOS. Now when I reboot it, it'll show me the initial screen and allow me to enter BIOS. But after changing the BIOS and rebooting again, I cannot get it to show anything. The monitor will not come out of standby.
If I clear the CMOS, it'll show me the initial screen again.

BTW, this keeps happening with either of the memory sticks plugged in.

Any idea on
1. How to get it to come up without intervention?
2. How to get it to boot with both memory sticks plugged in?

Just noticed I did not have my GPU in the signature...I have a eVGA 6800.

Thanks
Mayank

Try Pulling the Processor and both memory sticks. If you still have problems... you may be looking at a bad mobo.

Depends on what you mean by "tinkered" with the HS and "changing the BIOS" after it POSTs. Probably not a good idea if you're debugging the hardware to be OC'ing so soon after a problem. Check your MB manual for those beeps. They are usually coded to indicate the source of the problem.

I have already reseated the CPU and both memory sticks.

By tinkered with the HS I meant, I removed the HS, cleaned it up with applied Artic Silver and put it back on.
By changing the BIOS I did not mean OC'ing. I simply, changed the system time, boot order, enabled Cool n Quiet, disabled the extra LAN port etc... Did not modify the voltages or RAM timing or anything.

When you clear the CMOS you can get into the bios correct?
Does the computer boot to the operating system if you don't change anything after clearing the CMOS?

If I don't change anything, it'll boot into the OS once and then on the next boot, not take the monitor off the standby. The D-Bracket LED will go all green, but no display.

Sorry for the lack of updates, had a family emergency and could not find time to work on my PC.

So I got to trying a few things and I noticed that the PC will come up after I clear the CMOS. On post it displays an error saying "CMOS Checksum error, press F1 to continue, del to enter setup". Pressing F1 does boot the computer fine and loads the OS and everything will work fine until a reboot. On the next reboot, the machine will not initialize the display and the D Bracket will display 2 Red lights and 2 Orange?? (should be either Red or Green). Rebooting any number of times does not help until you clear the CMOS again.

I did replace the CMOS battery, but that did not help either. Any help will be appreciated.

Some more update. I got a new msi k8t neo2-f from tigerdirect and found that even that board will also only boot with only 1 DIMM. Using both the DIMM the board won't even post. Interchanging the memory sticks does not change anything.

Does this indicate a problem with the new MOBO or is it likely that the Memory Controller on my CPU is busted as far as addressing both banks is concerned?

unknown if this helps majmra, my expertise being "low". but, i recently bought an Asus P5E. treated it very kindly in my second build, and got the same error message as yourself. "CMOS checksum error". I never got to clearing CMOS as i'd have to research how that's done, but, I did have the fellow upstairs that runs the computer shop test the board, and he found it inoperable in 3 out of 8 systems, to quote him. After getting the initial Asus Welcome screen, my next 20 starts, maybe on 5 of them did I get a boot instead of black screen. I'd RMA this thing, but I threw a lot of things away. live and learn. i also notice a lot of issues with the Asus Maximus and P5E on the forums. The black screen fairly common. I did initially use only a 4 pin power plug when 8 pins required. unknown if that is a cause.
