Help with Modern Warfare 2 and steam

I reluctantly bought Modern Warfare 2 and am wondering if there is any way to have two single player games saved simultaneously. I know that the game is tied to and can be used with only one steam account, but is there some way make 2 ID's on the same steam account so that my friend and I can have 2 games for the campaign saved at the same time? I know that we cannot play at the same time, but what I mean is, can we play at different times on the same computer and not overwrite each other's games?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer this question. I am not that familiar with steam and how to set up the usernames.

I don't have the game, but you can try locating the save files, backing them up/move them somewhere safe, then start a new game. Then just switch save files afterwards.

I can see the save files in:

<Steam directory>\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players\save

There looks like the standard level start saves then about 100 MB in the autosave directory. So it may be able to be done but kind of tedious to do all of those moves each time?

Because your question about multiple Steam IDs I don't believe can be done but manually moving the save files might work if you want to put up with it.

Agreed, but who doesn't like to bitch about stuff because everyone else is?

I agree that there are too many people too often bitching and moaning, but I found myself in this category not long ago. I purchased Wolfenstein for PC, and was pretty irritated to find that sprint and crouch were toggled, and there was no way to untoggle those actions. In fact, I've never played a game where sprint was toggled. Very, very annoying. Also, Wolfenstein was the first PC game to play where I could not quick save whenever I wanted. From the sound of it, MW2 likely does not have quick save either (I could be wrong).

Why remove or restrict these features? These aren't trivial things, they've been in pc games since Quake 1 and Duke 3D. Removing these simplistic options, or restricting how the player can perform these actions does nothing except detract from the game.

My impressions on the game (away from all the controversy, SP side with only a bit of MP so far) are negative. I didn't like the CoD4 SP either. It is way too chaotic, there is constantly a huge number of bad guys shooting at you from every angle and the screen is always flashing and your camera is always shaking... it is boring.

What made the original Call of Duty so great was that there was down time between the set pieces that gave you a break - and even during the heavy action scenes there is pacing. With Cod4 and MW2 (And WaW as well) it is as if they just put the throttle all the way forward, all the time. There is no small probing attack on Pavlov's house before the large waves start coming. There is no manageable first few attacks at st. mere église and the lulls between the waves as the germans regroup, the same for pegasus bridge. It is just constant, "ZOMG THEY ARE TEH EVERYWARE!" and it resembles a shooting gallery more than modern warfare.

And about the single player campaign, what the hell does Infinity Ward think about the Russian army? During the campaign the russian soldiers had no standardized weaponry, and were using a whole litany of pistols, rifles and sub machine guns. It was as if they took ever single weapon out of counterstrike and gave them to the Russian army for the sake of "diversity," but it just bothered me that a major military force wouldn't have standardized arms or would send infantry into urban combat with tiny compact SMGs. Did H&K sponsor the game or something?

And the whole thing in Brazil, what the hell was that? Why are there swarms of the generic "local militia?" I literally blasted hundreds of them away and it wasn't very exciting, just boring.

By the way, the AI sucks. IW doesn't care that they are supposed to be highly trained soldiers, the enemies just run out into the open and stand right in front of you, spray and missing on full automatic. Once again, boring and not intense.

COD 4 was the beginning of the stupid console FPS style, and MW2 racks it up to a whole new level.

But seriously, there's no option for multiple player profiles? I'm not at home to check on how CoD4 worked, but I thought there was a directory structure like:
Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\profiles\[NAME]\save

Or something like that. Not just the autosave directory someone mentioned earlier. Is this not the case for MW2?

sarcasm?

Different times, same computer

I understood. With the current state of things, I just wouldn't be surprised if the publisher insisted the friend buy his own copy for use on his own steam account. We wouldn't want them to lose a sale, now would we?

No, that's pretty much piracy.

I dont know if I stated my question clearly enough, but this is something you could do in the first Modern Warfare Game. With one DVD and one computer, we had two profiles for single player and 2 profiles for multiplayer, so that when we played at different times, we could each play our own saved game or online profile. I have not found any way to do this with Modern Warfare 2, and find it very frustrating to have only one save for one profile.

I am not talking about 2 people playing at the same time from a single disk.

As I explained two weeks ago, I was being facetious.

Also, I took 2 minutes to google this issue and what you're trying to do is not supported by the game for the very reason I suggested. They want your friend to buy his own copy and then log in to Steam on your computer. That will allow him to play from a separate Steam profile.

But apparently, what you can do is set up your in-game profile and play, then copy the player directory to some other location. Let your friend start over and maintain his own saved games. Swap player directories as needed.

Someone apparently even wrote a loader to help automate this process. I don't have the game and I haven't tried the software, so YMMV.

Also, the profile directory swap approach will apparently still share multiplayer stats as those are stored in the Steam Cloud. So if you have an awesome record and your friend sucks, tough luck because he's basically going to be playing with your profile online if you use this workaround.

Thanks for the info Coin. Actually the multiplayer would be the other way around. My friend is good an I pretty much suck. lol

Anyway, my friend just played the single player campaign through first, then I played it, and he is the only one playing multiplayer. If I want to play mutliplayer, I will go back to the first game.
Never really thought about getting another disk and creating a different steam account on the same computer. That is good advice, but I would not have been willing to buy another disk.

I haven't played it, but after watching a Youtube vid of a complete Level, I pretty much came to the same conclusions you mention. It's nothing more than Video Whackamole, just a pile of Arcade BS masquerading as a challenge.

Not interested in the least.
