Iwas at Staples to pick up a modem that will work with XP so I can do upgrade. I picked up a USR Performance pro 5610B with v.92. Right next to it on the shelf was a PNY nVIDIA TNT2 M64 PCI card (32meg) on sale for $64. After coupon $54. The box said it had XP drivers with it. The problem came in when I realized I only have 2 PCi slots and the Maxtor ATA100 is in one and the old modem in the other. I picked up a USB Zoom modem and replaced the old modem with the TNT card. Windows ME installed the TNT card and the system recognized it as a nVIDIA TNT2 M64 just fine. Although I didn't really notice an increase in free ram or system resources I did notice that programs were opening quicker. The old onboard AGP rage pro turbo is still showing up Device manager and I did disable it in the hardware profile. Unfortunately I followed the instructions and installed the driver that came on the cdrom with the TNT card. Now I seem to have lost any speed advantage that I picked up before with the microsoft driver.
Is it possible that the MS drivers really made a difference? And if so, how can I uninstall the nVIDIA driver and go back to the MS one?
I'm looking for any advantage to help speed up my machine as a new one is not in the picture right now and I'd like to upgrade to XP from ME. The system is a celeron 500Mhz with 256 meg of RAM (maxed). I did change the jumper on the MB to disable the onboard video, but like I said it still showed up in device manager and I disabled it there also.
I've been told that by adding the separate video card I would be taking a big load off the processor. Is this a worthwhile upgrade to keep (I don't game or anything) or a waste?
Any help is appreciated.
